A decision by Blizzard has enraged many WoW fans. Some call it the “downfall of WoW Classic“.
That World of Warcraft Classic and also “Wrath of the Lich King Classic” have undergone some major changes is now old news. However, quite spontaneously and without much announcement, Blizzard has activated a feature in WotLK Classic that is making thousands of players angry.
The call for private servers is growing louder again, as Blizzard has also activated the “WoW token” in WotLK.
What is the WoW token? The WoW token is a way to earn gold in World of Warcraft in exchange for real money or game time in exchange for in-game gold.
Players can purchase the WoW token for 20 euros and then sell it in the auction house to other interested parties. The buyer then receives the token and can redeem it for 30 days of game time. The seller receives gold in exchange.
The price of the WoW token is automatically determined and based on supply and demand.
In modern World of Warcraft, the WoW token was introduced later, namely with the expansion Warlords of Draenor. The introduction was also controversial at that time and sparked discussions, although it is now largely accepted in modern WoW.
Can tokens be exchanged between Classic and Retail? No, that is not possible. A token purchased in WotLK can only be used there. This is already due to the different gold prices. While in Dragonflight a WoW token trades for about 300,000 gold, the starting price is around 10,000 gold in WotLK Classic.
Furthermore, the token from WotLK can only be redeemed for game time, not for Battle.net credit.
It’s chaos in the WoW Classic Subreddit
Among the fans, this sudden step is not well received. For many, this apparently marks the “downfall” of WoW and WotLK Classic. Especially in the WoW Classic subreddit, posts are piling up that harshly criticize Blizzard and declare the end of WotLK Classic.
There is heated discussion on whether this has made the game “Pay2Win”. Some argue that one should never be able to buy gold in WoW directly – while others point out that one has been able to buy gold continuously in recent years due to the many bots and gold sellers.
Especially interesting is also the reaction of the mods in the subreddit. They have suspended their “Rule 4”. This has previously prohibited mentioning or promoting private servers (also known as “pirate servers”). In the explanation, it says:
Since this subreddit has existed, we have upheld a rule that discussions about private servers, cheats, and similar topics are banned as long as Blizzard shows its goodwill.
The standard for this has already been damn low, but today it has become clear that the mask of integrity has completely fallen from the face of greed.
Feel free to discuss other options to play all versions of Classic in a way that promises more integrity than what Blizzard has to offer.
No matter how one feels about the matter, Yeetaway1404 probably sums it up well:
“This is currently the funniest subreddit on the entire internet.”
What do you think about Classic now having the WoW token? A good step by Blizzard? Or another “nail in the coffin” that takes Classic further away from the original version?
