For 20 years, World of Warcraft has failed to give a legendary weapon a quest. This is now being rectified.
Throughout the history of World of Warcraft, there have been many weapons that held a special place in the hearts of the game’s community. The first weapon that was surrounded by legends and myths was the Ashbringer. Although the weapon originally came from Vanilla, there were rumors and theories about how to obtain the improved version of this weapon even up to the “Wrath of the Lich King” expansion.
This dream seems to finally be coming true – with Phase 8 of the Season of Discovery.
What has been announced? The “Season of Discovery” is a heavily modified version of WoW Classic. Here there are new mechanics, new secrets, and new quests. In different phases, there are raids, new abilities for all classes, and other interesting innovations.
On April 8, 2025, Phase 8 will begin, taking us to the Plaguelands – towards New Avalon and the Scarlet Crusade (via worldofwarcraft.com). It seems that an “old” legendary weapon is becoming important again: The Ashbringer.
Why is the Ashbringer legendary? The Ashbringer was originally introduced in its corrupted form with Naxxramas and could be obtained during Vanilla WoW. What made this weapon special was that it occasionally whispered small phrases to its wielder. At the same time, the weapon allowed for a unique sequence to be triggered in the Scarlet Monastery.
The originally hostile followers of the Crusade suddenly became allies, and there were hints that a new quest line would emerge here to cleanse the Ashbringer.
The community was creative even back then, and especially a forum post from the early days of WoW became legendary – a player described the supposed “quest line” that would ultimately lead to obtaining the weapon.
In reality, this was entirely made up, and the quest line was never implemented in World of Warcraft.
Later, the Ashbringer was also available as an artifact weapon for paladins in “Legion” and even had some references to the old rumors – but it did not evoke the same flair.
It seems that Blizzard wants to rectify this oversight, and with the next phase of the Season of Discovery, they are making the Ashbringer a legendary weapon.
Is this guaranteed to be the Ashbringer? No, it is not 100% certain yet. However, the hints suggest so. Because in Phase 8 of the Season of Discovery, it revolves around the Scarlet Crusade and New Avalon. There will also be a “legendary weapon quest line for warriors, hunters, and paladins” – so all classes that can wield two-handed swords. This dramatically narrows down the possible legendary weapons and clearly points to the Ashbringer.
It is therefore not surprising that the Ashbringer is also among the 7 most powerful weapons of Azeroth.
