My tip: Combat Patrols, Spearhead, and Battalions
If you are willing to spend a bit more money, I can personally recommend the “medium” boxes as the best choice. With Combat Patrols (Warhammer 40,000), Spearhead (Age of Sigmar), and Battalions (The Old World), you get a larger selection of miniatures.
In the case of Warhammer 40,000, you often have not only individual infantry units but also support units and tanks or other vehicles. If you plan to play with “large” armies later, this offers the best value for money:
- Combat Patrols cost an average of 135 euros, with providers like Taschengelddieb for less.
- Spearheads usually cost 120 euros.
- The Battalions of The Old World are usually available for 150 euros.

The number of figures in Combat Patrols and Spearheads usually ranges from 10 to 25, with usually at least one large mini like a tank included. Some old
boxes have different contents than the newer ones. Battalions are larger, but not always available.
Combat Patrol and Spearhead can be played like Kill Team and Warcry as their own game variants. The rules are available for free on the official Warhammer website. Only Battalions do not have their own game system.
As a small comparison… a kidney costs about 120,000 euros on the black market. I know this, uh, from a friend. Even the expensive boxes here are still significantly less, and you can keep your organs!
As another tip, you can also simply buy pre-made armies second-hand, with a bit of luck even for little money at the flea market. While this misses the building and painting aspect, you can play directly.
