For the first time in a long time, the “Call of Duty” series is getting a brand new engine with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This will likely serve as the basis for future series installments.
On May 30, Activision and Infinity Ward officially announced and presented the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The 2019 installment taps into one of Call of Duty’s most popular series with a contemporary setting, much to the delight of many fans.
This should please many fans: There is also another piece of news that is likely to bring joy, which accompanied the reveal of Modern Warfare 2019.
Many players have been complaining for years about the outdated graphics and technology of the Call of Duty series, which has only been modified for 14 years. However, that is likely to change now. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the series is getting a brand new engine for the first time since Call of Duty 2 from 2005.

What we know about the new engine of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
What kind of impression does the new engine make? Press representatives who have already had a chance to take a look at the new Modern Warfare and thus the new engine all talk about a noticeable upgrade in graphics. The game looks incredible, even on a PS4.
According to initial statements, it includes among others
- better animations,
- more beautiful light and particle effects like floating smoke and dust
- rich detail
- as well as realistic graphics
that catch the eye.
What can the new engine do in detail? The exact name of the engine is not known. However, according to Infinity Ward, it is supposed to offer an immersive and photorealistic experience.
Among other things, a new rendering system for objects and materials called photogrammetry is being used. This is a technique that transfers images from real environments into 3D models, thus ensuring photorealistic appearance.
Furthermore, the new engine includes among others:
- a new PBR decal rendering system
- a global, volumetric lighting system that correctly shines light through windows or even through smoke
- 4K and HDR for better visuals
- DirectX Raytracing (for PC) – the new hype technique in the graphics area. This impressively renders floating smoke or dust particles
- a new GPU geometry pipeline for more detailed environments
- spectral rendering for realistic night vision and thermal effects
- new animation system for realistic character movements
- new audio tools – gunshots in tunnels sound significantly different than in open terrain. Dolby ATMOS is also supported on compatible systems

By the way: The PC version is supposed to be fully optimized for this platform and is being developed by Beenox. Therefore, fans should get much more than just a console port.
That’s why the new engine will be important for the Call of Duty series: The engine will likely play an important role for the entire “Call of Duty” franchise.
As Eurogamer reports, Infinity Ward will share this engine with other Call of Duty studios such as Sledgehammer Games or Raven Software. The new engine of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will then serve as the foundation for future Call of Duty installments.
