The eye of the player seems to be on other, new games like Anthem. But our author Schuhmann says: Hey, Destiny 2 “Black Armory” is really not that bad.
So it was at the launch of Black Armory: Yes, I am somehow 6 weeks behind. When Destiny 2 “Black Armory” started, I was at about Power Level 550. The new activities that came, only started at around 615.
Most of the time I was wandering around quite aimlessly. When I wanted to do some activities in the Dreaming City, the Taken kicked my ass.
I took 3 attempts for a mission where I was hopelessly under-leveled, had to retreat whenever a Goblin looked at me sideways, and regularly got my ass kicked.
Thinking about the new activities was out of the question: Black Armory was definitely not a DLC for me at the beginning of December.
That has changed: But in the last few weeks, I have really found fun in Destiny 2. With the Winter event “The Dawn” there were plenty of upgrade cores and suddenly the milestones were falling like crazy. This allowed me to regularly find better items and infuse them into my gear.
And I have been able to gradually acquire decent weapons:
- I got the Thunderlord as an Exotic.
- I fought my way through Gambit until the Vagabond from pity handed me the Neckbreaker
- And I upgraded my Vex Mythoclast to a masterpiece – that’s my favorite weapon in Destiny 2
Some might wrinkle their noses at the loadout. But I feel surprisingly comfortable with these weapons.
This is my Destiny weekly rhythm: I have also found my groove in Destiny 2, logging in regularly in the evenings and completing the milestones:
- The Flashpoint and the heroic adventure are quick to complete – that usually starts on Tuesday
- Once a week I tackle 3 Strikes – usually on Thursday
- Otherwise, I mainly go into Gambit – that mode has become really fun for me
This gradually brought me a higher Power Level.
The item has changed my game: In Gambit, I also found a decent piece of armor for my Titan: the One-Eyed Mask. The gag with the helmet is “Whoever deals damage to one is marked and you regain full health when you kill them.”
This has remarkably changed my gameplay – when I’m out in PvE or Gambit, I always check where the guy is that I can take down to heal myself.
Colleague Albrecht, to whom I told about my miraculous find, only had “That’s actually a PvP item” in response for the mask – but I like it.
In between, I discovered a seed in the Blind Well and ran around for a while as a Striker. Eventful days as Captain America.
So was my first contact with Black Armory: Armed and now at Light Level 615, I took a look into the Forge at the end of December.
In the Forge, hordes of enemies with slightly stronger mini-bosses come regularly. They must be taken out and then a core must be thrown into the forge like a baseball. There is a time limit: If you kill the enemies too slowly, it runs out and the attempt fails.
My teams regularly failed during the first attempts.
Of course, I blamed it on my teammates being much too weak, who couldn’t even manage to pull me through such a stupid forge.
No, the Forge is surprisingly challenging due to the time limit and I felt a bit guilty that I apparently spoiled their run.
Some farm their God Rolls there in droves. So back again, I swept through every milestone for two more weeks, farmed gear, infused it, and pushed my Power Level up.
This is how Destiny 2 has changed for me: With Light Level 625 sometime in January 2019, I completed the Forge that others began back in December. I explored a new part of Destiny 2 again.
With the new Power Level, I can now also comfortably roam in the Dreaming City and easily completed the mission that I struggled with brutally 6 weeks ago.
The interesting thing for me about Destiny 2 right now is how the game gradually opens up with higher Power Levels. Compared to early December, I now feel much more comfortable in Destiny 2 and I am able to explore the game.
In a certain way, Destiny 2 has become a “new game” for me in the past few weeks – which is what many Destiny veterans expect of Anthem.
Of course, I will check that out as well. But first, I will make sure to reach Power Level 650 in Destiny so that I don’t fall 6 weeks behind again for the next DLC.
