A player had extraordinary luck in Apex Legends. Some say it was almost too much luck – and promptly he received a ban. The Senior Designer then personally looked after his fate.
Who is it about? Swedish streamer and exceptionally skilled player Otto “ottr” Bostrom achieved this unique shot. Ottr plays Apex Legends at a semi-professional level for the Italian eSports organization Hic Sunt Leones Esports.
Some fans also know him from Overwatch, where he made a name for himself as a Zarya and D.Va player and achieved several victories in tournaments with his team.
Ottr is so good that the community thinks he cheats
The situation was as follows: His ban occurred when ottr and his team got into a firefight with another team. After hearing shots from further below, he entered one of the large halls that stand around, for example, at Repulsor from the roof.
From above, he could see some opponents and immediately opened fire with an R-301. He hit one player, and as he swung over the railing, he killed a second opponent with a few more bullets.
To viewers, it looked like an aimbot was targeting the opponent’s head. Ottr even asked his chat: “Please don’t clip this!” But cheaters are a serious problem in Apex Legends, and so calls for a ban on ottr were made.
This is how ottr proved his innocence: Ottr himself later visited the relevant spot in the game to prove that his unique shot was not due to an aimbot. It simply has to do with a mechanic of the game.
When a player swings over a railing with a drawn weapon or while shooting, the weapon jerks abruptly. It looks similar to an aimbot. In ottr’s case, the opponent’s head just happened to be exactly where the weapon was aiming.
Nonetheless, ottr received the ban at least temporarily. Apex Legends has been cracking down hard on cheaters for some time now, who are even complaining about it.
What happened next? After his ban, ottr reached out directly to the developers. In a tweet, he asked to please be reinstated. Typically, developers do not respond to such requests.
In ottr’s case, however, Senior Designer Chin Xiang Chong made an exception. As ottr was banned just about ten minutes before the start of the Apex Pro League he wanted to participate in, the developer personally took care of it.
He recognized that it was just luck and not a cheat, and ensured that the ban was lifted. Lucky him. Other players who actually cheat do not have such luck:
