At Gamescom, the developer studio V1 Interactive showcased the shooter Disintegration, which may appear visually reminiscent of Destiny, but is said to play very differently. We present the title in a bit more detail.
What is Disintegration? The shooter places you in a future where humans transfer their brains into robot bodies. They fight against the overwhelmingly powerful faction Rayonne, which aims to exterminate humanity.
- Disintegration features a single-player campaign in which you take on the role of Romer Shoal, who gets drawn into this conflict with his crew while trying to regain his human body
- The game combines shooter and strategy elements
- You command a unit of soldiers and engage in battles with your Gravcycle, a kind of hover bike
- There are several Gravcycles with different characteristics
- It is necessary to deploy your troops tactically, as each unit has special abilities
- Multiplayer takes place in three modes
In the trailer, you can see for yourself. While the design of Disintegration is strongly reminiscent of Destiny, the gameplay is entirely different:
When is the game coming out? Disintegration is set to be released in 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Shooter and Strategy in One
What is special about the game? Disintegration is not a typical shooter. Rather, the title mixes shooter elements with strategy.
You actively play as your commander, who zooms across the landscape on a Gravcycle and can intervene in the action. However, it is also necessary to direct a troop of soldiers. You give them orders and need to keep an eye on them.
How does the multiplayer mode work? So far, the “Retrieval” mode has been demonstrated. This shows very well how the actual gameplay principle of Disintegration works.
- In Retrieval, five players face off against five others. Each controls their commander and a small troop of NPC soldiers
- Your task is to transport a bomb to the enemy base and blow it up
- You must protect your troops and give them orders
- You don’t have unlimited time, as the bomb timer is ticking. When time runs out, it explodes, no matter where you are
- It is important to proceed in a coordinated manner, use the units tactically, and communicate within the team
Why does the game look so similar to Destiny? Disintegration is developed by Marcus Lehto, former Art Director at Bungie. He explains that the look of this game is simply in his DNA. He loves this kind of science fiction, which is why his new game visually resembles Halo and Destiny.
However, Lehto wants to offer something different and new in terms of gameplay. The actual concept of Disintegration is not based on Halo or Destiny, but on Bungie’s strategy game Myth from 1997.
Lehto explains that he wanted to expand the principle of a real-time strategy game and hence introduced shooter elements and hover bikes. Additionally, he wanted to set the story in a science fiction scenario.
Looks Like Destiny, But It Isn’t
Is the game aimed at Destiny fans? Disintegration is not a shooter in the traditional sense and does not play that way either. As a Destiny fan, one must engage with the strategy elements. This brings a new dimension, whether it will appeal to every shooter fan remains to be seen.
What do players say about Disintegration? Players are currently showing some skepticism, but also interest. There is some surprise that Disintegration looks so much like Destiny, yet offers a different gameplay principle. However, this gameplay also sparks the interest of some players.
On Reddit, Boltty states: “The idea of not having a pair of boots on the ground and instead flying a heavily armed hover bike is refreshing and, in combination with a controllable AI squad, piques my interest.”
What do you think about Disintegration? Could the mix of shooter and strategy work?
