PS5 and Xbox Series X both use their own storage system. But what happens when the storage is full? We explain the technology the consoles use and what options are available.
How fast are PS5 and Xbox Series X? In its preview, for example, Microsoft demonstrated how fast the storage of the Xbox Series will be. Both consoles are said to be very fast:
- The internal SSD of the PlayStation 5 is said to be able to write at 5.5 GB/s
- The internal SSD of the Xbox Series X is slightly slower but still delivers 2.4 GB/s.
But the storage is not unlimited: Games like Borderlands 3 require a lot of storage space and if you install many games, the storage fills up quickly.
What options do both consoles offer? Both next-gen consoles allow for connecting an external hard drive via USB:
- However, anyone who installs their games on the external hard drive cannot benefit from the fast internal storage.
- Games that use the new technology of the Xbox Series X are said not to work on an external HDD, but older games will.

How does the Xbox Series X solve the problem? Microsoft has developed an external storage system in collaboration with Seagate. The SSD can simply be plugged into the slot on the back of the Xbox Series X.
What is the advantage? The advantage is that plugging in and installation are said to be very simple. Additionally, the speed advantage of the system can still be utilized, unlike with external storage media.
What is the disadvantage? It is not yet known how large the external storage will be. Furthermore, this special system could be very expensive – at least significantly more expensive than conventional external hard drives.
PS5 – What happens when the storage is full?
How does the PS5 solve the problem? In contrast to Microsoft, Sony does not rely on a specially developed storage system. Instead, the PlayStation 5 is expected to have an internal slot for an additional SSD.
What is the advantage? Regular SSDs are now inexpensive to buy, and in our opinion, there is no reason not to get an SSD. The internal slot also offers more flexibility in choosing the manufacturer. Therefore, the prices are likely to be lower compared to the Xbox Series X.
What is the disadvantage? Only SSDs of a certain size are expected to fit into the PS5 slot. Mark Cerny had explained in the stream about the PS5 that Sony wants to test the SSDs to ensure that they work both in the slot and with the PS5. And that won’t happen overnight.
Furthermore, unlike Microsoft, Sony relies on an internal slot. However, many will likely prefer to use an external hard drive rather than opening their new console – the risk of damaging or breaking something is too great for many.
PS5 vs Xbox Series X: That’s why the Xbox is ahead
Although the storage expansion for the Xbox is likely to be significantly more expensive than for the PS5, it is generally easier for many, as you only need to plug the storage in from the outside. Many might not have the courage to open up the console and install additional storage with the PS5.
