Warcraft: The Beginning sets a new record and is now officially the most successful video game adaptation of all time.

The Warcraft film has been in theaters worldwide for several weeks now, and it’s about time for a first look back to determine how successful the film has actually been.
According to the site destructoid, the film has likely long surpassed the threshold to be considered “profitable.” As a rule of thumb, one has to earn back at least double the production costs to also recoup marketing expenses. The production costs amounted to 160 million dollars, so double that would be 320 million dollars.
Currently, Warcraft has grossed 377 million, thus clearly entering the profit zone. This makes Warcraft: The Beginning the most successful video game adaptation of all time, leaving the second place Prince of Persia with 336 million far behind.
However, interest in the film declines quite rapidly in most countries. The majority of viewers were attracted in the first week and the corresponding weekend, after which interest quickly wanes. In the second week, approximately 72% fewer people in America watched the film than in its release week.
Moreover, the Warcraft film is also a phenomenon on a completely different level. The ratings from critics and “ordinary” moviegoers diverge significantly. On Rotten Tomatoes, the ratings from many reviews compile to a devastating 29%. But how did moviegoers rate the film? Completely differently: A solid 81% is what the film earns according to viewers’ opinions. A rating difference of more than 50% likely represents another peculiar record.
