That Blizzard is finally turning its franchises into real TV series has long been a wish of the community. A small taste is available for Overwatch fans.
Even though Blizzard’s reputation has taken a few notable hits in recent months and years, they are still known for developing exciting game worlds and stories. Fans often believe that the franchises need their own TV series or movies. At least a small taste of how “Overwatch as an anime” can work is now available.
What kind of series is this? “Overwatch: Genesis” is a “mini-series”. The trailer already reveals that the series will have a characteristic anime style. While there are also CGI effects, as seen with the Omnics in the trailer, the vast majority seems to be drawn in the typical anime style.
The trailer already hints that the story shows the rise of the Omnics. These machines, which even develop their own consciousness, were initially useful to humanity and dramatically improved everyday life. However, after several incidents, the notorious “Omnic Crisis” occurred, which was ended or at least massively contained by Overwatch.
However, the pleasure will not last particularly long. The three episodes are each supposed to last only about 5 minutes. So those who hoped to get a “real” Overwatch anime might be disappointed.
But at least everyone else will be presented with a bit of Overwatch story – because fans have been waiting for this for almost half a decade.
When will the series be released? The release of the first episode of the mini-series Overwatch: Genesis is today, on 06.07.2023 at 18:00 on the Overwatch YouTube channel.
Isn’t there supposed to be an Overwatch series coming? For years, there have been rumors that a TV series about Overwatch is being worked on behind the scenes. However, after the initial rumors, things have gone very quiet about this project. It has never been explained in detail whether the plans were scrapped or, in doubt, never existed at all.
Even if the hope for a “real” Blizzard series is low, the highest chance for a presentation is probably at BlizzCon in November.
