The new shooter “The Finals” does not have a release date on Steam yet, but it has a new trailer. And everything is literally flying into the air.
What does the trailer show? “If you can see something in the Finals, our participants can probably destroy it. The arena is charged. Here. We. Gooooooooooooo,” bellows a commentator, and the last word stretches to the 36-second mark of the trailer.
Pounding music, gunshots, roaring, coins flying around, explosions: Your headphones will have a lot to do with the new pre-alpha trailer for “The Finals.” Your eyes will too: The fast-paced action is barely followable, but there is a lot packed in.
We see firearms, ziplines, a kind of fixed foam that can be used as cover or bridge. In one scene, a guy gets smashed by a sledgehammer and bursts into a pile of clinking coins, while in the next, a rocket launcher tears down an entire building wall.
Overall, in the entire video, a lot of walls, ceilings, and other environments are laid waste. “Throw wrecking balls at your opponents” was already stated in the summer of 2022 at Gamescom for “The Finals”, “Don’t just pull the trigger, demolish entire buildings” – and the motto is clearly reflected in the game.
What is going on here?
When is the game coming out? A release date is not yet known, but the game is set to launch as a free-to-play game for Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X. An alpha test for PC is scheduled to start on September 29 and run until October 3. You can register via Steam, but the number of participants is limited.
What is The Finals about? The gameplay is not directly clear from the trailer; rather, you are more busy with all the explosions and the flying real estate.
But fundamentally, The Finals is supposed to put you in a game show where you compete against other players in teams of three. The goal is to create the largest spectacle possible.
The environment is comprehensively destructible, from furniture pieces to entire building walls. This can also be used tactically, like in the trailer at 0:49: You don’t want to be the guy who has an entire floor collapse on him.
Creative Director Gustav Tilleby of Embark Studios, which was founded by former Battlefield developers, told Polygon: “This is a shooter, a game where aiming and shooting are important. But it is also a game where players can use the environment and adapt to changes in it.”
The game is supposed to feel intuitive while also offering a lot of chaos. The environments are expected to feature changing weather and times of day.
It looks like “The Finals” will require a lot of attention once it launches. You can find the opposite of that here: Here are the 5 best shooters you can play on the side.
