gamescom awarded the title “Best Trailer”. The winner is no surprise.
Which game won the title? The “Harry Potter” role-playing game Hogwarts Legacy won the title for the best trailer. The title developed by Avalanche will be released on February 10, 2023, on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Windows.
In the role-playing game, however, you do not embody any of the characters known from the books or films, but send your own character to the wizarding school.

What does the trailer show? The ONL trailer of Hogwarts Legacy gives you a glimpse into the forbidden curses and focuses on a companion quest of the RPG in which you meet Sebastian Sallow.
Furthermore, the shown scenes indicate that you must decide within the quest whether to engage with the dark arts or reject them.
Action RPG with a huge franchise backing
Why is the award not a surprise? Harry Potter is one of the largest and most beloved franchises in the world. Both the books and the films have many fans.
Accordingly, Hogwarts Legacy also has a certain level of attention and was already a hot topic among many Twitter users waiting for news about the action RPG before the gamescom started. The raw numbers on YouTube also reflect this:
- 666,000 views on Warner Bros. DE (via YouTube)
- 310,000 views on Hogwarts Legacy (via YouTube)
- 356,000 views on PlayStation (via YouTube)
The three mentioned channels achieved a total of 1,332,000 views with the Hogwarts Legacy trailer from the Opening Night Live of gamescom.
The biggest argument for Hogwarts Legacy is probably the pop-cultural relevance of the Harry Potter franchise. The RPG may also be interesting to people who are not die-hard gamers, simply because they love Harry Potter.
But the reactions on-site were also clear during the trailer presentation, as reported by MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski. The title received a lot of applause, and the mood was already very good when the title was mentioned.
Two other trailers also deserved the title
Which trailers were the biggest competition for the title? Especially two trailers stood out at gamescom 2022, which would also have been strong contenders for the title “Best Trailer” and could convince both through their views on YouTube as well as with their pure presentation:
1. Lords of the Fallen – Announcement Trailer
- 1,914,000 views via YouTube
- strong presentation with beautiful graphics
- Trailer convinces with a mix of dark fantasy and classic rock (Danzig – Mother)
2. Dune: Awakening – Announcement Trailer
- 2,896,000 views via YouTube
- also part of a popular franchise (Dune)
- Survival MMO from the creators of “Conan Exiles”
- Trailer impresses with stunning graphics
If we only look at the raw views, Hogwarts Legacy would only rank third among the trailers we named. It would have been no surprise if either of the other two titles had won.
Do you think Hogwarts Legacy deserves the title “Best Trailer” or do you have another game at the forefront? Were Dune: Awakening or Lords of the Fallen robbed of the title? Feel free to let us know here on MeinMMO in the comments!
For MeinMMO editor Schuhmann, there is already a big winner at gamescom 2022 and a game that is all but dead.
I say: gamescom 2022 already has a big winner – and one game is all but dead
