Most users have expensive hardware and electronics at home. This includes not only computers, notebooks, or gaming consoles but also other household appliances. And these devices are particularly sensitive to strong power fluctuations and can break down as well.
Especially in a time when graphics cards are very expensive and PS5 consoles are hardly available, gamers want their hardware to be protected.
A user explained on Reddit that a storm had raged at their place. They were very lucky: Instead of their expensive hardware, only a few sockets had to suffer.
A cable for a few euros saves several thousand euros of hardware
What exactly happened? A user posted a picture and a sentence on Reddit: “Had a power surge last night, these [parts] saved me electronics worth 15,000 US dollars.”
The picture shows two surge protector sockets. And these sockets probably saved their hardware. 15,000 US dollars are equivalent to 13,500 euros.
In a further post, they explained that there had been a severe storm. The sockets were completely burned out. The power indicator light was on, but the grounded and protected lights could no longer be turned on. The sockets also no longer supplied power to the connected devices.
Apart from the sockets, only “a stove, the air conditioning in the bedroom, and a digital clock” were said to be damaged. The rest would have been protected by the sockets.
Community debates how useful a surge protector really is
What are the reactions? There is a heated discussion about the post in the comments. Some users explain that such a surge protector has already saved their own electronics and advocate for such a power strip.
Others think that the investment of 10 euros doesn’t hurt anyone and in the best case, no lightning would strike their own apartment. In the worst case, one could protect several thousand euros with 100 euros. Therefore, one should not save in the wrong place.

However, there are also users who consider the entire discussion nonsense. Because why should one invest money in such sockets if they have never had such problems?
Honest question: Where do you all live that you have to worry about surges?
In almost 30 years of my life, not a single electronic device has ever been damaged by a surge. I don’t even know if I’ve ever experienced a power surge. I have connected my PC to a (old, probably outdated) surge protector, but only to utilize the additional sockets. I have never really regarded it as protection.

Basically, it’s worth being careful with your hardware anyway, to clean your PC from dust or maintain it generally.
What do you think? Do you consider such a socket a worthwhile investment or do you think it’s an unnecessary feature that you don’t need? Tell us in the comments!
Many users are also wondering if it can be a problem to completely cut off the computer’s power, for example, by turning off the power strip at the end of the day. MyMMO answers this question in a detailed article:
