The 33-year-old Chuck “Cdew” Dewland received an offer in World of Warcraft Classic that one cannot refuse: he was playing his rogue on a hardcore server of WoW and was supposed to delete all his items in the middle of enemy territory.
That’s the situation: Cdew is one of the best WoW players in the world, having made a name for himself in the PvP aspect of the MMORPG back in 2009. The American has earned almost $180,000 with WoW over the years, and his biggest success was winning the Arena WoW Championship in 2018 with a prize pool of $30,000.
On Twitch, he currently plays in the streamer guild OnlyFangs on a hardcore server.
In a Twitch stream at the beginning of December, he ran a handicap event, where for a certain amount of donated Twitch subs, he imposed burdens on himself:
- Anyone who donated 50 subs forced him to “walk” for 5 minutes instead of running
- With 80 subs, he would delete a bag but was allowed to swap items
- With 100 donated subs, he had to roll for an item that he would then delete
But one donor got serious and expanded the rules with a very special offer.
“Delete everything”
This was the donation: The viewer “martianpig” donated $7,000, about €6,700, with the two words: “Delete everything.”
This put Cdew in a dilemma, because if he deleted everything in enemy territory, he would be as good as dead, and his level-57 rogue would be lost forever. So Cdew cautiously rode to safety while pondering the offer.
Yet the voice in the chat was relentless: “Stop riding, delete everything.”
Streamer finds compromise to save his hero
This is how the streamer resolved the situation: Cdew actually deleted all his equipment on the spot, especially his blue sword “Thrash Blade” visibly hurt him. Then he teleported with the hearthstone to the capital of the Horde, Orgrimmar, thus bringing his hero to safety.
This was apparently not satisfactory for the donor, who complained in the chat, and the cruel Twitch chat grumbled as well, but ultimately the streamer got away with the solution.
In OG, he sold his remaining items from his inventory and then asked if he could send the about 300 gold he now had to his guild leader Sodapoppin.
Once this was approved, Cdew, as a naked and poor level-57 rogue, set about rebuilding his account. In the game, he was now poor, but in real life, he was $7,000 richer.
What happened next? If you fast-forward 6 hours in the stream, you can see Cdew hitting mobs with his bare hands while a warlock and his tank pet do the work. So it seems he has evidently leached his way back up.
How is this being discussed: The situation was captured and discussed in a clip on X (formerly Twitter). Many are cynical and believe the donor can reverse the payment. Others say anyone who spends so much money on a gag isn’t all there. But those who empathize with the streamer say: I would have deleted everything right away too.
The streamer Cdew emerged from the situation unscathed, but his guildmate MissRage, who was also playing with OnlyFangs on the hardcore server, had much less luck: Twitch streamer uses a feature in WoW and her heroine is lost forever
