The Twitch streamer Amouranth purchased shares of Activision Blizzard worth 1.73 million euros. She hopes for a profit of 20 percent if the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft goes through. To her fans, she says: She wants to advocate for the return of semi-naked women to World of Warcraft. Blizzard replaced them with fruit in light of the sexism scandal.
Who is she?
- Amouranth is the largest streamer on the Twitch platform, but also the most controversial.
- She describes her online presence as “shameless E-Girl”: She baths in a bikini in a hot tub, moans into microphones, presents herself in lingerie on social media. She walks a fine line of what Twitch currently allows and what is considered sexually offensive. For that, she has been banned multiple times, because she emphasized her butt too much.
- Behind this winking facade, Amouranth is a businesswoman with various investments. Her goal is to make as much money as possible in a short time to retire early and dedicate her life to animal welfare, as she says.
This is her new investment: Amouranth stated on Twitter on March 28 that she purchased 24,000 shares of Activision Blizzard at a price of $79.32. That amounts to shares worth 1.73 million euros (via twitter).
“I will turn the fruit bowls back into women!”
What she says to the fans: As her style is, Amouranth ironically tells the fans:
I plan to get a seat on the board with the goal of de-objectifying women. I will turn the fruit bowls back into women.
Amouranth
This refers to a change in World of Warcraft. Blizzard had, in September 2021 after the sexism scandal, transformed images of semi-naked women in the game into paintings of fruit bowls.
This was criticized.
Amouranth aims for a profit of €340,000 from the Microsoft acquisition
Why is she really buying the shares? Elsewhere, Amouranth makes it clear why she really bought the shares. She considers it a good investment (via twitter):
- Currently, a share costs about $80.
- If the acquisition offer from Microsoft goes through and the tech giant really takes over Activision Blizzard, Amouranth will receive $95 per share. Because Microsoft has offered significantly more in the acquisition proposal than the shares are currently worth. This would lead Amouranth – before taxes – to make a profit of about €340,000.
She says: Even if the deal falls through, she considers the $80 she paid a good price.
It is still unclear whether Microsoft will actually take over Activision Blizzard. The boards of both companies have agreed to the merger, but the votes from the shareholders and the approval from the financial authorities in the USA are still pending.
When large corporations merge, there is a risk of monopolization.
So it is not certain that Amouranth will receive her targeted “20% profit”.
Does she mean it with the fruit? The “seat on the board” is apparently meant to be understood ironically. Although 1.7 million euros is a huge amount for normal citizens, the 24,000 shares Amouranth bought only represent a tiny fraction of Activision Blizzard. So she is not buying much influence with the shares.
There are about 780 million shares of the company in circulation – the market value of Activision Blizzard is around 62 billion US dollars. Even though Amouranth is among the highest-paid streamers on Twitch, she is not in that league. At least not yet.
