On reddit, the user TheSilphRoad posted a contribution in which he describes his tricky and frustrating situation. His progress in Pokémon Go is limited when his Pokémon do not return from the gyms.
What happens when the Pokémon do not return from gyms? There is a limit to the number of Pokémon that can be in a gym at the same time. If they do not return, no new Pokémon can be placed in other gyms, nor will the player earn Pokécoins for defending a gym.
Player is stuck with his 20 Pokémon in the gyms
The user mentions in his post that he was surprised to find out that he could no longer place a Pokémon in a gym at some point. It said that he had reached the maximum number of defenders. So he checked and unfortunately found that his total of 20 defenders are placed in gyms located in extremely remote areas.
Therefore, it is unlikely that another trainer will kick his Pokémon out of the gyms in the near future. This means that he is stuck in this situation. As long as there is a limit to the number of Pokémon that can be placed in gyms, and no other trainer sends his Pokémon back by defeating them, he cannot take over any more gyms.
Moreover, there are not even Pokécoins, as the player only receives these after his Pokémon has returned to him. He is dissatisfied and wonders why Niantic thinks it is a good idea to limit the number of gym defenders to 20 Pokémon.
This would ruin the part of Pokémon Go that is supposed to encourage players to go outside and explore the world. He perceives the limit and the exact number as extremely arbitrary and restrictive. Therefore, he wishes that Niantic would raise the limit of 20 Pokémon to a higher limit.
What you could do if the Pokémon do not return
But what can you do if your Pokémon are stuck in the gym and you thus have no chance to earn Pokécoins? In principle, there is only one way: the Pokémon must definitely be knocked out, otherwise it will not progress.
Here are your options:
- If you have friends or know other trainers who play on another team, you could ask them to knock your Pokémon out of the gym.
- If you do not know anyone who could kick your Pokémon out of the gym, it is advisable to connect with other players. Maybe try a post on your social media apps and tag the location of the gym. Perhaps another trainer who frequently stays near the gym may stumble upon your post.
- If you have a friend who is on another team but is not nearby any of the gyms: How about taking a Pokémon day trip together and “liberating” some Pokémon from gyms?
