On August 23, the major DLC Immortal Empires will be released for Total War: Warhammer 3. The strategy game has tens of thousands of fans eagerly awaiting the update.
What kind of title is this? Immortal Empires is a free update for Total War: Warhammer 3. It brings together the factions of all predecessors into a gigantic conquest campaign in the new strategy game.
Why is Immortal Empires so important? Total War: Warhammer 3 was released on February 17, 2022, and according to Metacritic, it is the best strategy game of 2022 with 86%. Even before its release, it was one of the best-selling games on Steam.
However, Warhammer 3 is still absolutely incomplete. It lacks new factions, leaders, and generally a reason to play more often. The campaign becomes relatively dull quite quickly. With Immortal Empires, this will change.
The campaign loses its annoying mechanics. Instead, conquest is the focus, and depending on the size of the map, a turn can easily take several dozen hours. Currently, thousands of fans of the popular strategy series are waiting for the update.
Unlike its predecessors, Warhammer 3 offers multiplayer for up to 8 players who can even act simultaneously. In Warhammer 2, players had to take turns. And how great the demand for Immortal Empires is can be seen in the player numbers (via steamcharts.com):
- 5,334 people played Total War: Warhammer 3 in the last 30 days with a peak of 10,128 (as of July 14)
- even 11,207 people played the direct predecessor Total War: Warhammer 2 with a peak of 18,581
- still, 594 players remained loyal to Total War: Warhammer 1 – at the same time, up to 1,034 people played
Since the Total War games are also playable through the Epic Games Store and partly with Xbox Game Pass, the numbers for this are even missing. In the video, you can see the trailer for Immortal Empires:

What is included in Immortal Empires? The special feature of Immortal Empires is that the free DLC summarizes all games and connects them into a single campaign. 278 factions will then be in the game and expands the playable races in the 3rd part to include popular races such as:
- Skaven, the cunning ratmen from the underground
- the Empire
- various elven factions
- lizardmen
- greenskins, vampires, and more
As the Warhammer universe is huge, the races are also diverse and bring different mechanics and fantasies. Unlike Warcraft, however, Warhammer is “grittier”, more brutal, and clearly aimed at adults.
By the way: Even though the DLC is generally free, you need to own the other Total War games and race DLCs if you want to play them in the Immortal Empires campaign. You can easily join other games, but then only have access to the races from part 3.
When will Immortal Empires be released? In a Q&A on YouTube, the developers revealed that Immortal Empires will launch on August 23 for PC. However, it is named a beta, even though the update is supposed to be complete.
This is due to the developers stating that the gigantic scale may lead to bugs that they want to iron out over time.
However, the timing is poorly chosen for German gamers, as gamescom 2022 also starts on August 23. Many fans will surely want to attend, as it is a physical event again this year, which means they can only start diving into Immortal Empires later.
