The PS5 event on 16.09., that is today, is very exciting for many. Because it is expected that Sony will finally reveal the release date and especially the price of the PlayStation 5. Our author Sven Galitzki asks: Is it really that crucial for you?
What is the PS5 presentation about today? Today, on September 16th, Sony is holding an event focused on the next-gen console. In this PS5 livestream, primarily launch titles for the PlayStation 5 and games that will come out later will be presented or explored in more detail.
But many suspect and hope that Sony will also reveal the official price and the exact release date of the PS5 there. There is also hope for news regarding the pre-ordering of the PS5.
After all, the direct competitor with its two consoles Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S has already laid the groundwork a few days ago: Xbox Series X: Price and Release Date Officially Revealed – Pre-orders Starting Soon
When will the PS5 be released? What we know so far: An exact release date for the PS5 is still pending, but we already know that the new Sony console will be released during the “Holiday 2020” period.
This refers to the time of November/December, as both months are marked by important holidays in the USA: Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Moreover, it can be assumed that Sony will keep its PS5 release close to the launch of the new Xbox generation. The two new Xbox consoles can already be pre-ordered starting September 22nd and are set to be released on November 10th.
For me, it’s not the price of the PS5 that matters in the end. And for you?
Why get worked up? For weeks and months, for many fans, players, and interested parties, it feels like everything revolves around the price of the new PlayStation 5. What will the PS5 without a disc drive cost? And what will you likely have to pay for the version with a disc?
Hardly a day goes by without heated speculation, new leaks, expert opinions, or analyst predictions.
And tonight, it could actually happen. Because if you think logically, the chances are quite good that Sony will indeed reveal the eagerly anticipated information about the price and release date of the PS5 today.
Because Microsoft has laid the groundwork and wants to get started soon. If Sony hasn’t addressed these important aspects by then, some undecided customers might run into the open arms of the competition.
But all this talk about the price leaves me cold. Because I have already made my decision. And the price, as long as it remains consistent with previous patterns, has not been a significant factor in my choice of my next console.
PS5 vs. Xbox Series X – This is what matters to me: Whether Xbox Series X or PS5 – both consoles sound quite interesting, have their advantages and also their fans.
What I’ve increasingly noticed lately: Although it seems that many are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the PS5 price (including many of my friends), for hardly anyone in my circle who wants to acquire the PS5 or is still torn between it and the new Xbox, the final price of the new Sony console is really relevant.
Other factors are more decisive. But why?
- On one hand, the price difference between the new Sony and Microsoft consoles is not expected to be significant. Even if Sony cannot entirely match the prices of MS or even intends to undercut them, the differences are likely not to exceed 100€. Thus, the prices are expected to remain within the familiar range that console players already know and accept.
- As for hardware, Microsoft has a slight edge on paper with the Xbox Series X, but numerous experts agree that the difference is not all that substantial in the end. Here too, for many who already own a console, factors like exclusive titles, the feel (form of the controller), or additional offers like the Game Pass are more relevant.
- For someone (like me) who has been on PlayStation for years, has amassed many friends and play buddies there, and also possesses a lot of digital content – these factors are likely to outweigh the final price. As long as I don’t have to pay 800€ for a PlayStation 5 while I can get an Xbox Series X for 499€, I don’t need to think long.
- Only for new customers could the price turn out to be a decisive factor, although here too, the consoles, despite having nearly comparable performance, pursue somewhat different philosophies, which in my opinion are likely to be more decisive.
I have long decided on the PS5
Is the price of the PS5 really that important to you? I have already made my decision for the PS5. That does not mean that one next-gen console is better than the other or not – I also find the Xbox Series X great.
But in my opinion, and based on experience in my personal environment, for someone who already owns a console and knows what it means to acquire a new console, primarily other factors are more decisive than the price. So it is for me as well.
Because a price around 500€ will hardly surprise anyone, while other things like a digital game collection, specific exclusive titles, backward compatibility, or the friend circle should not be underestimated when it comes to choosing the next console. For these reasons, I decided quite quickly for Sony.
