What kind of game is this? Icarus is the new project from DayZ creator Dean Hall and his indie studio RocketWerks and is part of the new survival games that you can look forward to in 2021. In Icarus, you play as part of a crew tasked with exploring a “second Earth.”
The game features a dystopian sci-fi setting, mixing classic survival with some innovations that are meant to bring fresh air. For example, time is a crucial factor. You can also be revived by your group.
In addition to conventional survival elements, there is also the time factor that spices up gameplay. Moreover, it is the variety of skill and tech trees that makes Icarus special. You can combine your abilities in countless ways and experiment a lot.
You have to face various dangers:
- Wild animals hunt you.
- Hunger and thirst must also be considered in all actions.
- Oxygen is also slowly running out because the air on the planet is toxic.
- Random weather events make your life even more difficult.

Who is it worth it for? If you like survival games, you should definitely take a look at this game. It brings some twists to the genre.
In the past, Twitch streamer Shroud has already commented on the game, saying: Icarus has the potential to be the best survival game of the coming years.
Before the release, there were also two beta phases. The first one took place in August and attracted a few thousand players. The second phase ran until early November. Unfortunately, there are still no player ratings for it.
This is what makes Icarus different from many survival games: The main goal of a round is not to settle the planet. On the contrary: the goal is to escape from this deadly rock.
You must reach the land shuttle by the agreed time in a session, which takes you back into orbit. If you fail to do so, you will be left behind on the planet. Such sessions can last 10 minutes or even 48 hours.
This factor is reminiscent of games like Escape from Tarkov. You find yourself on a hostile alien planet. Here, you first have to fulfill your basic needs like hunger, thirst, and oxygen.
After that, you build a base and explore new technologies to survive until the pickup time.
