The MMORPG Throne and Liberty is set to be released in Europe by Amazon in 2024, and will be available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. A new insider report contains information about a mobile version, a leadership change, and plans for the release in the West.
This is the insider report: The South Korean business site MTN reports, citing sources at NCSoft:
- Throne and Liberty is performing so poorly in South Korea that NCSoft is now planning a mobile version to initiate a revival similar to Lost Ark. This aims to cover the market in East Asia, such as Taiwan. They hope that Throne and Liberty can recover after the initial crisis. According to a source at NCSoft, the mobile release is still in the planning stage and not yet finalized.
- Moreover, the leadership of Throne and Liberty has been changed: Producer Ahn Kong-wook has resigned. Now the leadership is to be restructured. Currently, Executive Director Choi Moon-young is leading the development. He took over the project back in the 2010s.
- This information was obtained by MTN through a source at NCSoft.
Release of Throne and Liberty in the West still planned for 2024
Here is the good news, according to MTN:
A delegation from Amazon Games is visiting South Korea this week to discuss specific details regarding a launch and collaboration.
According to MTN, NCSoft continues to plan for a release of Throne and Liberty by Amazon in Europe and the USA in 2024.
What the site also says: The site explains why “Throne and Liberty” has such an unusual name and is not simply called “Lineage 3” or “TL” (The Lineage). Lineage is a huge South Korean MMORPG franchise, similarly popular there as WoW is here.
The site states: After the success of “Lineage W,” the original plan was abandoned, and they wanted to sell “The Lineage” more as a separate brand because the Lineage name carries too strong market expectations – also regarding a business model. Traditionally, Lineage is a free-to-play MMORPG.
Now, however, they believe that the weak success of Throne and Liberty could be due to the name and confusion over the game’s identity.
The news that Throne and Liberty has been underperforming in South Korea since its release half a year ago continues to solidify. But NCSoft seems unwilling to give up on the MMORPG; rather, they believe in a revival: Everyone is waiting for the new MMORPG Throne and Liberty – But there is bad news
