With Throne and Liberty, a new, big MMORPG is coming in 2023. Developed by veterans at NCSoft and released, at least for us in the West, by Amazon Games, the game has all the potential to become really big. But where can you actually play it?
On which platforms will TL be released? Throne and Liberty is now known by several names. Originally announced as Lineage Eternal, it disappeared for a long time and reappeared as Project TL, now it has a final name.
With such a long development time, it’s also often a reasonable question where you can actually play the game in the end. Currently confirmed are PC, PS5, and Xbox Series. However, according to current knowledge, there will not be Last-Gen versions for PS4. We will update this article if that changes.
Is Throne and Liberty coming to Steam? For many Western players, this is an essential question that is difficult to answer. But currently, the answer is: very likely yes. Below, we explain two reasons why this is so likely.
Two reasons speak for a Steam release of Throne and Liberty
The first reason: This is the publisher Amazon Games. They have always relied heavily on Steam and did not even offer their own launchers for the two major MMORPGs New World and Lost Ark, and have done very well with that so far. A similar concept would be quite conceivable for Throne and Liberty.
The second reason: This is a statement from a PR person from NCSoft on April 5, 2022. They stated to the Korean website newsis.com: ‘Throne and Liberty is thinking very positively about the Steam release while Guild Wars is preparing for the release. Steam has a very large impact in the Western market as a PC gaming platform and we are actively considering targeting the American and European PC markets with it.’
Release still this year – With many open questions
What speaks against it? Against a release on Steam, at least against a pure release on the platform, namely NCSoft’s own platform. With “Purple,” they have long established their own method of getting games to people.
On the official website of Throne and Liberty, there is also a link to Purple, which is still ‘dead’ and leads to nowhere. However, a Steam link is currently not to be found. On neither of the two platforms is the game officially listed yet.
It is also possible that Purple is only used for the release in Korea, while the Western market relies on Steam. It is also conceivable that both launchers are used in parallel for Throne and Liberty. However, this is currently nothing but speculation.
When will Throne and Liberty be released? The new MMORPG is set to be globally released for PC and consoles in the first half of 2023. There is currently no exact date. The communicated timeframe in 2023 was only recently confirmed again in a presentation to shareholders.
The chances are good that the game will indeed be released soon and not postponed again.
