You want to launch fully with Throne and Liberty for the first time, but don’t know exactly which build is suitable for a smooth start, a quick leveling phase, and maybe even the endgame? MeinMMO has a strong recommendation for you!
What is this build? Those who have already looked at our tier list of the best weapons in Throne and Liberty know that we recommend several combinations using sword and shield or wand and tome for leveling.
- Sword and shield allow you to withstand significantly more damage and deal surprisingly high damage.
- Wand and tome grant you healing, which easily helps to recover from mistakes and also win tougher fights.
- If you familiarize yourself early on with sword and shield or wand and tome, you can take on the role of tank or healer more easily later in group challenges.
From the mentioned advantages, you could start your adventure right away with this combination. However, we find the overall damage of this weapon combo to be too low, while the mana costs are relatively high. Both of these factors reduce leveling speed.
Therefore, we recommend for the start the combination of sword and shield plus two-handed sword, which allows you to whirl through enemy groups almost non-stop. If you ever need a bit more self-healing in a tough spot, you can temporarily switch to wand and tome – this weapon can keep you alive even at the lowest level.
This trailer gets you ready for the adventure in Throne and Liberty:
Build for leveling with sword and shield plus two-handed sword
Advantages of the build:
- Extremely resilient
- Self-healing through shield survivability technique
- High (area) damage
- Little downtime
- Good control abilities
- You can take on the tank role at any time
Disadvantages of the build:
- No ranged weapon
- Quite low mobility
- High cooldowns
- Initially slight mana problems
How to increase your stats
Your first goal is to improve your mana efficiency. Therefore, invest the first 20 points in wisdom. Under no circumstances more, as you will receive fewer benefits from each additional point of wisdom afterwards. So, switch your focus to agility at level 22 to optimize your maximum weapon damage, critical chance, evasion, and attack speed – again with 20 points.
The last nine points up to the maximum level of 50 then go into strength. Thus, the priority list looks as follows:
- Level 1 to 21: 20 points in wisdom
- Level 22 to 41: 20 points in agility
- Level 42 to 50: 9 points in strength

General tips
- Counter Wutang attacks whenever possible with the shield survivability technique to restore health and mana (through the passive skill Resilient Spirit).
- Search for the task “Elemental Rings” in the lithography book to convert the three green rings into the powerful blue ring “Violent Sign.”
- When you complete the story codex of chapter 1, you will receive a green upgrade for your two-handed sword slot.
- Up to level 50, you can level easily with green equipment pieces that you upgraded to level 6. Tips for upgrading equipment can be found here. After that, look for blue upgrades, into which you can then transfer the upgrades from the green items.
Selection of active skills
When you equip two-handed sword plus sword and shield at the weapon chest in the tutorial, you have exactly the number of skills available that you can put into the skill bar. Switching skills is worthwhile at level 18 and level 24:
- Level 18: Replace Strategic Charge with Stalwart Bastion
- Level 24: Replace Devastating Tornado with Willbreaker
Selection of passive skills
You can activate up to eight passive skills during the leveling phase. Here is our recommendation:
- Level 3: Skillful Evasion and Robust Constitution
- Level 6: Replace Skillful Evasion with Vital Force, also take Resilient Spirit
- Level 20: Add Cold Warrior
- Level 25: Choose Moral of the Victor
- Level 30: Spectrum of Torment is a good choice
- Level 40: In the last two slots, put Unyielding Armor and Moral Boost
How to upgrade your skills
During the leveling phase, you can upgrade your skills with growth books. Prioritize the skills as follows, making sure to upgrade the mentioned skills to blue before aiming for purple levels:
- Shield Attack
- Gaia Fall
- Death Strike
- Courage of DaVinci
- Stunning Strike
- Stalwart Bastion
- Willbreaker
- Provoking Roar
All other skills that you use can be upgraded afterwards according to your preference. For passive skills, the following prioritization sequence is recommended:
- Robust Constitution
- Vital Force
- Resilient Spirit
- Moral of the Victor
- Unyielding Armor
- Moral Boost
- Spectrum of Torment
- Cold Warrior
Sword and shield in action:
How to modify your skills
From level 15 onwards, you can spend specialization points to modify your skills. Here are our recommendations:
- Improve Shield Attack with Piercing Attack
- Improve Stunning Strike with Cooldown Reduction / Damage Increased / Effect Duration Increase
- Turn Gaia Fall into Frost Cleaving, activate Attack Speed Increase / Critical Chance Increase
- Improve Death Strike with Cooldown Reduction / Damage Increase
- Optimize Courage of DaVinci with Duration Increased / Damage Reduction / Instant Healing
- Extend Counter Barrier with Cooldown Reduced
- Improve Provoking Roar with Effect Duration / Cooldown Reduced
- Activate the Trait Focus on Effect Target for Stalwart Bastion
- Modify Willbreaker with Damage Area Change
- Enhance the Chain Hook with Skill Distance Increased
Play style for leveling
Once again, the reminder: Counter Wutang attacks whenever possible with the shield survivability technique to restore health and mana (through the passive skill Resilient Spirit).
Start a fight against multiple targets best with Courage of DaVinci. Follow it up with Piercing Attack, Provoking Roar, Willbreaker, Frost Cleaving, and Bold Blows. Make sure to always use Willbreaker after Provoking Roar. With Chain Hook, you can pull distant targets into the fray.
