Northgard

What is Northgard? Northgard is a real-time strategy game (“RTS”) in which you lead a Viking clan to victory. As is usual in the genre, you must gather resources (or have them gathered), build your base, and raise an army.
However, in Northgard, you cannot build freely; you must explore and settle parts of the map. Each part of the map has special properties, such as forests or specific fields for victory, and a limited number of building slots. Resource management is therefore also an important factor.
What makes Northgard so good:
- simple yet beautiful comic-style graphics
- very easy entry due to simple mechanics, later depth thanks to different clans (peoples)
- Nordic mythology as a basis for units, spells, and abilities
- randomly generated maps for diverse rounds
- strong co-op mode with the expedition
How is the multiplayer in Northgard? Like in any classic RTS, you can also compete with friends against AI or other players in Northgard. There are public games and matches that you can easily join or create.
The expedition is, however, a gem of the game. Here you can tackle a series of tasks with increasing difficulty, either alone or with one other player. Each task grants you a new, permanent ability for the run. This spices up the standard gameplay with special mechanics tailored to your clan.
Beard Factor: Chris Hemsworth. Kind of fits and makes the game really good, but could also work in a different setting.
Valheim

What is Valheim? Similar to Tribes of Midgard, in Valheim you play as a fallen Viking. However, instead of preventing Ragnarök, you must fight the enemies of the All-Father Odin in the fictional Valheim.
In survival mode, you start naked, gather resources, and build a base. The highlight is the currently 5 bosses that you must defeat. Each one concludes a “chapter” and grants you items with which you can gather better materials.
Valheim was a surprising success for the indie developers from Sweden and quickly attracted millions of players. Fans are currently waiting for new content.
What makes Valheim so good:
- low system requirements and yet strong visuals with the right settings
- various biomes, such as the dark forest and the upcoming mistlands, with their own atmosphere
- a detailed building system that allows entire cities and excites the majority of players
- mead and food that buff you instead of just serving survival
- currently 5 unique bosses as a highlight of the battles
- Valheim also supports mods that can completely change the game
How is the multiplayer in Valheim? You can play Valheim alone or with friends, where you can either set up a dedicated server or start a local server. Rented servers are always accessible, but cost extra. The local server must be started by you.
If you play with several Vikings, Valheim becomes harder and scales the opponents up. Some fans have even started a project to make Valheim an MMO with thousands of players.
Beard Factor: Odin. I mean… seriously, Odin is IN THE GAME and controls whether we are doing everything right. We are Vikings still fighting for the godfather in the afterlife. It doesn’t get better than this.
