Music as the Key to an Immersive RPG Experience
One of the atmospheric highlights of The Elder Scrolls Online is when you enter a tavern where an NPC bard is performing a lively song. The music pieces from Tamriel are simply well-written and fit perfectly into the fantasy world.
Even better is when an MMORPG allows the community to express themselves creatively with various musical instruments and even put on impressive concerts with a band. Or when players combine music with emotes and chat bubbles to perform entertaining plays.
Lord of the Rings Online remains atmospherically rich today, thanks to such a music system. In Final Fantasy XIV, you can compose music pieces since the Stormblood expansion – MeinMMO spoke some time ago with one of the most popular bands from Eorzea. And even in New World, you can drum, flute, and strum the guitar. With the right music, everything is simply better, including an MMORPG.
Always Lawful is Boring
Many MMORPGs offer shady classes like Thief, Rogue, or Assassin in class selection, yet you often still play the role of the hero who must save the world from extinction at the end of the day. It’s a pity. It could be more exciting to have the choice to behave lawfully or criminally.
However, there are only a few online role-playing games with a true justice system. The Elder Scrolls Online and ArcheAge, for instance. There, you actually have the opportunity to operate as a criminal, to steal, rob, and murder. If caught, you face punishment – up to imprisonment.
In ArcheAge, there is even a jury made up of several players who can find the accused guilty. If you attract negative attention too often, you may start a career as an outlaw pirate. When your choices and actions can genuinely have such consequences, the fun begins.
