The SSD of the PS5 is highly praised by many developers. Now, UE5 developer Epic has explained that they even modified Unreal Engine 5 for the PS5. One reason: the high speed of the PS5’s SSD.
Where does the information come from? The Vice President of Engineering at Epic Games, Nick Penwarden, explained in an interview with VG24/7 (via vg247) that the PS5’s high performance lies in the strength of the SSD:
“The PlayStation 5 offers a tremendous leap in computing and graphics performance, but its storage architecture is also something very special.”
PS5 games could benefit from the speed of the SSD
The SSD is so fast that developers could move much more data simultaneously for the game. Sony has already stated that the PS5 should be 100 times faster than the PS4.
Therefore, developers adapted Unreal Engine 5 so that so much data can be transferred. Penwarden explains:
The ability to stream content at extreme speeds allows developers to create denser and more detailed environments, changing the way we think about streaming content. It is so effective that we have rewritten our core I/O subsystems for Unreal Engine with the PlayStation 5 in mind.

Other developers are also impressed by the speed of the PlayStation 5. Many also consider the SSD to be a key component of the new console.
This is why Unreal Engine 5 is closely linked to the PS5: Unreal Engine 5 has been a major topic for potential PS5 buyers since mid-May: back then impressive PS5 gameplay was shown that excited many players.
Stunning scenes created and pre-rendered with a developer version of the PS5 were displayed.
The gameplay felt like a promise to many players interested in the PS5 about what is possible in the future.
