Meanwhile, some users already have their PS5 console and can play on it. The hardware experts from Gamers Nexus have taken a closer look at the console. While the noise level and power consumption are excellent, they are not pleased with the temperature of the PS5. Especially the memory gets hot.
Sony itself demonstrated mid-year how to properly dismantle the PS5 and showed how the PlayStation 5 is built. Some exciting details were presented here, such as the feature against dirt on the PS5.
Now a hardware expert has taken a closer look at the console and tested how loud and how hot the console actually gets.
What’s it about? The YouTube channel Gamers Nexus specializes in hardware, consoles, and other technology and currently has about 1.2 million subscribers. The channel regularly disassembles consoles, graphics cards, and other devices and tests them.
Steve Burke, Editor-in-Chief of Gamers Nexus, took a close look at Sony’s new console in the latest YouTube video of the channel. He notes that one part of the console gets hot during operation. We have embedded the (English) video here for you.
Hardware Expert Tests PS5: Noise Level Good, Temperature Less
In the video, Burke takes on the next-gen console. While the noise level and power consumption remain within limits, the measured temperatures are high.
This is happening: While the temperatures of the processor and video memory stay in the normal range, the temperatures of the RAM are rising significantly. Gamers Nexus measures temperatures of 92 – 93 degrees Celsius. This concerns the memory located on the back of the motherboard. The room temperature of the testing environment was between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius.
The ideal temperature for RAM in a PC is between 26 and 60 degrees Celsius (via tech-aktuell.de)

Here lies the problem: According to Gamers Nexus, the memory is “reaching its thermal limits” and is therefore close to the maximum limit. If outside temperatures rise and the memory is already at the temperature limit, this could become a problem in the long term. Burke explains that he feels “uncomfortable with the high temperature of the memory.”
This is what you should pay attention to: If the console gets too hot, it overheats and shuts down. You can see what that looks like on Twitter:
Therefore, you should position your console correctly: The tips for a hot and loud PS4 still apply to the PlayStation 5. Position the console in a dry and well-ventilated place, where it is not exposed to fluctuating temperatures. You should not place your PS5 in a closed cabinet where little air can reach it.
These are further results:
- It doesn’t matter if you remove one side of the console; the temperatures do not change. Only when you remove both side panels and the console is “naked” do the temperatures drop by several degrees Celsius.
- The console consumes about 100 watts when idling in the menu. According to Gamers Nexus, this is a lot for a console that isn’t doing anything at that moment. Under load, however, the power consumption performs “very well and optimized.” AMD has significantly optimized the chip from the last generation.
- The noise level is about 32 decibels even at full load. According to Gamers Nexus, this is “damn good.” Here, Sony has taken user criticism to heart.
