With the upcoming PS4 firmware update 5.50, your PS4 Pro will receive supersampling support. This leads to better graphics for all gamers who do not own a 4K TV.
Recently, the beta for the firmware update 5.50 has been ongoing, with selected PS4 users able to participate. There are no details from Sony yet regarding the main features, and a release date is still unknown.
However, information about 5.50 has leaked to the public. Apparently, some beta testers leaked screenshots and features of the update that are now circulating online.
Among them is supersampling support for the PS4 Pro.
PS4 Firmware 5.50 brings innovations such as supersampling
This screenshot (via wccftech) mentions supersampling for Sony’s latest console:
Translated, this means:
“The supersampling mode allows you to receive 4K-like picture quality, even if you connect the PS4 Pro to a TV with a resolution of 2K or less. The effect depends on the game – not every improvement is visible. In some games, supersampling reduces the FPS.”
In short: If you own a PS4 Pro but do not have a 4K TV, supersampling will enhance the graphics quality more or less. However, this may come at the cost of framerate, which is why you can decide for yourself whether you want to enable the supersampling mode or not.
What is supersampling actually?
Supersampling is a method where the PS4 Pro scales down high-resolution images to the lower resolution of the TV. This results in anti-aliasing and avoids “stair-step effects.” The result is a better picture.
Supersampling is already used in the Xbox One X.
Via Resetera, an (unconfirmed) list of games has been published that are supposed to support supersampling at launch:

- Final Fantasy XII – The Zodiac Age
- Final Fantasy XIV – A Realm Reborn

According to beta testers, there are these additional features:
- You can delete notifications
- You can hide purchased games in the library. This way you can hide annoying demos or betas.
- On the PS4, you can create “teams” for various social activities.
Keep in mind that these are not official details. They have been compiled by beta testers. Before the release of the update, Sony will announce all new features.
