The submachine gun AUG from Modern Warfare was the best weapon in the game at the launch of the Call of Duty: Warzone. However, due to nerfs to the recoil, the weapon lost its status. Now it is back on top and a little under-the-radar tip for close combat. MeinMMO has the details.
What is it about? The Warzone data expert “JGOD” is constantly on the lookout for the best weapons in the battle royale. Every statistical anomaly, every advantage in damage or handling of a weapon he tries to find and pack into a strong and valid setup.
Now the number magician has managed to dig up a strong little tip again: the AUG from CoD MW. Unlike the AUG from Cold War, the “old” AUG is a submachine gun. You can, however, use an ammunition attachment for more damage that fires 5.56 rounds from the AUG. And with exactly this attachment, the AUG from CoD MW becomes a strong alternative for close combat. We embed JGOD’s video here:
CoD Warzone: AUG setup takes out enemies up to 15 meters
What setup should I try? To bring the AUG to a competitive level, you need the 5.56 rounds. Here you should even go for the large 60-round magazine. Grab the strong Monolithic Suppressor for that. The remaining 3 attachments are used to improve the mobility of the submachine gun. For a better iron sight, you should use a blueprint of the weapon.
- Muzzle: Suppressor (Monolithic)
- Laser: Tactical Laser
- Stock: FORGE TAC Close Combat Stock
- Magazine: 5.56 NATO 60-round Drum
- Grip: Patterned Grip Tape

What makes the AUG strong now? The old SMG from CoD MW is slightly ahead in damage compared to the mobile “Cold War” competitors and also comes with a large 60-round magazine. JGOD compares the AUG with the two SMGs OTs 9 and MP5 from Cold War. Both alternatives deliver high damage. But the AUG cannot be matched:
- Time-to-Kill on chest hits
- AUG from CoD MW: 542 milliseconds
- OTs 9 from Cold War: 561 milliseconds
- MP5 from Cold War: 562 milliseconds
With the AUG, it doesn’t matter where your hits land. Even with knee shots, the time-to-kill remains stable and you need 7 shots for your kill. Only the MP5 from CoD MW is slightly faster – at 526 milliseconds.
Also, when it comes to range, the AUG excels. Only after 15 meters does the SMG enter the second damage range, while the two competitors do not even reach 10 meters. The huge magazine with 60 rounds on deck is also a plus.
Additionally, with the setup shown here, you have very similar values for your time to aim. Meta setups of the OTs and MP5 take 250 milliseconds to aim, while the AUG stands at 234 milliseconds with this setup. The sprint-to-fire speed is similarly matched.

What can’t the AUG do well? Time-to-kill and aim speed would have been enough at the time of CoD MW to make the AUG the best SMG by far. But in the “Cold War” era, it looks different, as the OTs 9 and the MP5 from Cold War come with strong mobility values.
Movement speed and your motions while aiming are significantly higher than with the AUG from CoD MW. Your strafing (side movements while aiming) is about 30% slower than with the Cold War competitors. This becomes noticeable in direct firefights when you want to quickly peek around a corner and then retreat back to cover.
Furthermore, with the AUG, you are slightly weaker in the second damage range. Your time-to-kill goes up to nearly 720 milliseconds at 15 meters, while the OTs 9 and MP5 from Cold War remain around 700 milliseconds.
Pros and Cons of the AUG SMG from CoD MW
Who should try the AUG SMG? With the start of Season 4 a few months ago, the Warzone developers announced the general time-to-kill in the game would be increased and have already taken some measures for this.
The AUG SMG is currently very strong, especially for players who use little strafing and rely on the ADS speed and damage of a weapon. If you’re always looking for the strong weapons with the highest damage – then the AUG is now your faithful companion in close-range combat.
The AUG from CoD MW is surprisingly a hit in Warzone again and dominates close combat. JGOD himself does not necessarily call the weapon “meta” due to its moderate mobility but sees great potential.
If you play with SMGs in your loadouts, then grab the AUG now – perhaps the drawbacks are not a problem for you at all, and you have a new deletion function for your enemies in close combat.
