The video game series God of War will soon get an adaptation as a series. This is being created at Amazon, and its creator has now announced an important update, which will please some and disappoint others.
What kind of series is this? Series adaptations of video games have not only been very good in recent years but also successful. Well-known examples include Arcane, Fallout, or The Last of Us.
Now God of War is also getting its own series, which will be developed and produced by Amazon. It will, unsurprisingly, tell the story of Kratos. While the project was already announced some time ago, the showrunner has now revealed which aspect of the game he considers particularly important – and when the story takes place.

What has the showrunner revealed? Ronald D. Moore is in charge of the new series and spoke at Comic Con 2025 with Collider about it. It became clear that the scripts are just in development, but work is progressing well.
The series takes the two reboot games as a template, thus relocating the story and its characters to Norse mythology. The first three iterations of the original took place in ancient Greece.
This decision is likely to please those fans who particularly enjoyed the modern God of War titles. Fans of the original may feel disappointed by the departure from the original Kratos.
Although God of War is Moore’s first video game adaptation, he wants to ensure everything is done right. He emphasized to IGN that it is important for him to accurately capture the tone of the original. Despite all the action and cool monsters, he is especially focused on the emotional relationship between father and son.
However, it will not be a 1:1 adaptation:
This is an adaptation, so it’s an adaptation/interpretation when dealing with live-action, and it has been really fun to say: “Wow, there’s a lot we can play with. Okay, we want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of the story.” There are all these things to refer back to for inspiration. It has been really interesting.

It is also noteworthy that Moore himself is not a gamer, so he knows God of War only from watching. Nevertheless, he wanted to engage with it.
How many episodes will there be? The first season is expected to contain 10 episodes. Another season has already been ordered by Amazon.
