With “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” a new fantasy movie has hit the theaters. MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann viewed the film in the cinema and believes: Every gamer should give the film a chance.
What kind of movie is this? The new “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” tells the story of a thief and a group of quite unusual adventurers. Together, they undertake a risky heist to reclaim a lost relic.
However, this operation goes terribly wrong and triggers a whole series of unexpected events. I don’t want to reveal too much at this point, as the film has some exciting twists.
Already my colleague Benedict explained, that the trailer for the film creates a great desire for MMORPGs. I have embedded the trailer here for you. And after my visit to the cinema, I can confirm that!
The new movie is a feast for gamers and fantasy fans
Personally, I’ve already spent countless gaming hours on the Sword Coast. Just in Baldur’s Gate, I’ve spent over a thousand gaming hours, and it keeps increasing each year. In “Neverwinter Nights,” I could also spend many gaming hours. Together with my namesake Benedict, I even gave Dark Alliance a chance.
The story may not be very original, but with its ideas and humor, the film resonates with me completely.
Why does this work for me as a gamer? Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most well-known and largest role-playing games in the world. As pen & paper, it is usually played at a table with character sheets, a storyteller, and dice. However, the new film “Honor Among Thieves” skillfully tells a fun story from these elements:
All characters in the story take on typical roles from an RPG party in the film:
- A bard who sees himself as the team’s planner but has few skills otherwise.
- A wizard with little self-confidence.
- A druid who can transform into a giant owl bear or other animals.
- A warrior who can hit hard with her axe but speaks little.
- A paladin with much charisma and honor but little speaking talent.
And all of them also have their typical recognition value: The paladin, for example, wears shiny armor, the bard always has an instrument on his back, while the warrior always has her axe within reach. I encounter all known role-playing clichés in this chaotic but lovable party.
And it just fits perfectly. I constantly feel that “could” also be my party, with which I am currently traversing a dungeon, more or less successfully.
In one scene, an adventurer is surprised by a mimic, a monster that disguises itself as a treasure chest. In another scene, there is a gelatinous cube that some of you have certainly already encountered.
In yet another scene, there is a somewhat… interesting dragon. But you have to see that for yourself.
As a gamer, you feel right at home because many aspects just seem instantly familiar. And after the film, I simply feel like digging out my old Baldur’s Gate again and going on adventures with my party once more.
But without a bard, because I can hardly deal with him:
