Which race-class combo in World of Warcraft is actually the most popular? We looked it up – and the winner was kind of obvious.
In World of Warcraft, you have a wide selection of characters that you can play. While there are some restrictions – since not every race can choose every class – most combinations are possible now. However, some pairings are more common than others. We took a look at the statistics and reveal which race and class combination occurs most frequently in World of Warcraft.
At the same time, we also take a look at which race-class combo is so rare that you virtually never encounter such a character.
Where do the data come from? The information comes from the website Data for Azeroth. While it doesn’t analyze all WoW accounts, it does evaluate a very large number, in the range of several hundred thousand. Therefore, the data is at least representative. We only included characters that have reached the maximum level (level 80).
Night Elf Druids dominate everything
The combination of Night Elves and Druids is in first place by a large margin. Night Elf Druids make up a whole 5.0% of all characters at the maximum level – by a significant distance.
This is hardly surprising. After all, Druids are basically the Night Elf class, offering not only a pretty aesthetic, catering to the fantasy of shapeshifting, but also potentially filling any role in a group.
Night Elves and Druids are simply the natural combination – and the first WoW cinematic likely contributed significantly to that becoming the norm.
In second place – also with little surprise – are Blood Elf Paladins at 4.1%, known primarily as Blood Knights in the lore. Blood Elves were the first race from the Horde that could become Paladins with The Burning Crusade. Blood Elves are also generally the most popular race in the Horde. Since Blood Elves were also the first “pretty” race in the Horde, it’s logical that many chose to become a Blood Elf Paladin. Additionally, Paladins are currently extremely popular.
Places 3 and 4 have both Demon Hunters, namely Blood Elf Demon Hunters (3.8%) and Night Elf Demon Hunters (3.6%). These values are also hardly surprising, as Demon Hunters are limited to these two races. For instance, anyone wanting to play a Demon Hunter in the Horde must choose Blood Elf – the same applies to the Alliance with the Night Elves.
In 5th place are Human Paladins. Their popularity is also mainly rooted in the lore of Warcraft. Already in the strategy games Warcraft II and Warcraft III, Human Paladins were especially heroic characters that had a significant impact on the story. Heroes like Uther Lightbringer serve as role models for many players when creating their own character.
In 6th place are Dracthyr Evokers with 2.0%, who also have their place with little surprise. After all, Dracthyr are the only ones who can actually become Evokers, thus a fairly large percentage falls to them.

The rarest race-class combo in World of Warcraft
Now let’s take a look at the combinations that are the least common.
Note that we filtered this a bit. For example, we combined Pandaren (who have classes on both sides) so they have a slightly higher percentage. The same applies to Earthen, who are also available for both Horde and Alliance.
After this adjustment, the rarest race-class combination is: Highmountain Tauren Warlocks. Only 0.0091% of all characters chose this combination, making it extremely exclusive.
Minimally more common are Highmountain Tauren Mages at 0.0097% and Lightforged Draenei Rogues at 0.0109%.
Overall, most Highmountain Tauren characters can be found in very small percentages. So if you want to have a particularly exclusive combination that you don’t encounter often in Azeroth, you might want to consider Highmountain Tauren.
