When the expansion Visions of Eternity for Guild Wars 2 is released, the already beautiful world of Tyria can look forward to a tech update.
What are the developers planning? With the new expansion Visions of Eternity coming on October 28, 2025, not only will new content arrive on the servers of Guild Wars 2, but the team at Arenanet also wants to improve the technology of the now 13-year-old MMORPG. Specifically, a new shadow technology aims to make the world of Tyria even more beautiful with more detail and dynamics.
The detailed measures to achieve this are as follows:
- Increased resolution for shadows (setting “Medium” from 512 × 512 to 1024 × 1024 / “High” and “Ultra” from 1024 × 1024 to 2048 × 2048)
- Less distortion for objects in shadow areas that are in the background.
- Optimization for the dynamic display of shadows, providing a more realistic representation
- Even smaller objects should now cast shadows

What distinguishes the graphics of the MMORPG? When Guild Wars 2 launched 13 years ago, it was among the most visually stunning representatives of the genre. The characters, landscapes, and cities were bursting with detail. The reflections in the water were jaw-dropping. Large towns felt – also due to the ambient sounds – wonderfully alive.
Over time, the pure graphics quality has naturally become a bit outdated. In one visual aspect, Guild Wars 2 still ranks among the best that the genre has to offer: its art design. The world of Tyria looks as if it has sprung straight from a watercolor painting.
As with other audiovisual landmarks like Persona 5, all interface elements in Guild Wars 2 integrate seamlessly into this style. The world map even features a smooth zoom functionality. Everything feels coherent and stands out noticeably from many other MMORPGs.
What do I need to know about Visions of Eternity? With the expansion the following highlight features are coming to Tyria:
- 2 explorable maps/areas on the new island “Castora”
- 1 new elite specialization for each class, totaling 9 new options
- New abilities for your skimmer including mastery path
- A total of 3 new mastery paths
- A new location on the coast of Castora for your home
- New ways to save, copy, share, and move your home
- New legendary equipment in the form of two new legendary weapons as well as a ring, an accessory, and a water breather
In later updates, there will also be new raids and group content for 10 players, where you can face instanced challenges in PvE.
