Microsoft has released a new security update for Windows 10 and Windows 11 . However, some users are complaining that they can no longer log in.
Microsoft regularly brings updates for its Windows operating system. However, not everything always goes smoothly. There are regularly updates that can even ruin your gaming performance under Windows 10/11.
What has happened now? According to the online magazine The Register, users who have downloaded the latest update for Windows are experiencing some issues. It can even happen that they are locked out of their PC after a restart.

What kind of update is this? The update for Windows 11 designated KB5012170 addresses security vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized code to be executed during the boot process. Since most Windows computers now rely on UEFI, the update is very important.
The update KB5012170 is causing some users to be unable to start their PCs. After installing the update and subsequently restarting the PC, some users are prompted to enter their BitLocker key to regain access to their computer.
However, the problem only occurs if you or your employer had BitLocker set up on your PC. If you have never used BitLocker, you should not experience any issues.
What exactly is the problem? The frustrating part is that you need to enter a specific recovery key if you want access to your data again. You cannot start your system, nor can you access your pictures, games, or other stuff in any other way.
In the most frustrating case, you do not have your BitLocker key at hand, or you may not even know what kind of recovery key is needed.

I locked myself out, what can I do? You installed the update and now have the problem that you can no longer log in or are seeing the nice recovery screen? Don’t panic, there are several options:
- Log in to your Microsoft account on another device to find the recovery key. It is usually stored there.
- During the setup of BitLocker, Windows offers you the option to print the key. If you printed the key, check your documents.
- If you saved the key on a USB stick, connect the USB flash drive to your locked PC and follow the instructions.
