For years, hardly any major developer dared to develop a large “Real-Time Strategy” game, but now there is a new hope for the genre with Stormgate.
Why is there so much hope in Stormgate? The reason there is so much hope in Stormgate is because of the developers behind it. The team behind the strategy game mostly consists of developers from Starcraft and Warcraft, mixed with eSports managers from the RTS world. eSports professionals drew early attention to the strategic novelty.
Since the announcement in spring 2023, fans have been eagerly awaiting the game. Many see it as the genre’s salvation, after the last big player Starcraft 2 was released over 10 years ago. Age of Empires 4 also failed to fully capture the hearts of RTS fans. It seems to differ too much from the playstyle of Starcraft or Warcraft 3. Fans are hungry for a new big title in the genre.
What does the game offer? Stormgate is said to be a highly reactive real-time strategy game, setting itself apart from competitor Age of Empires 4. Stormgate looks similar to Starcraft 2 in initial footage, very fast, and is supposed to combine base building with simultaneous control of combat units. The game attempts to combine the foundational pillars of the genre with new technology and presents itself as a conceptual successor to Starcraft II. The developers claim to have developed a new technology for the game that promises fluid gameplay even with over 1,000 units on a map at the same time.
The game is set to release on Steam and is among the titles that are on the wish lists of most Steam users. The game is planned to be Free2Play and is expected to release in 2024.

What was that for a campaign? Although the game was already fully funded beforehand, the developers hoped for further funding through a Kickstarter campaign to incorporate more features into the game. Fans had previously wished for a detailed co-op mode, which has now been expanded through the campaign.
How is the Kickstarter campaign going? After just 15 minutes, Stormgate was fully funded, and within two days, already 1 million euros were raised. The Kickstarter campaign is currently still showing increasing trends.
Tonight, a new trailer for Stormgate will be presented at the Game Awards, supported by actor Simu Liu (34), which is expected to generate additional attention for the game. The game is likely to appeal to many fans and the numbers for the Kickstarter campaign may increase even more after the Game Awards.
Why does Stormgate value eSports so much? Not only does Stormgate place great value on becoming an eSports title, but ESL also gladly welcomes Stormgate as a new title. After the eSports league announced the end of the ESL Championship in Warcraft 3 last summer, there are hardly any opportunities left for professional RTS players to continue their careers.
With Stormgate, there is new hope here as well, as the well-known eSports professional Dario “TLO” Wünsch (33) is already onboard at Stormgate, appreciated by the community. At Dreamhack Hannover on December 17, the first show matches will be held in collaboration with ESL.
After years without significant movement in the RTS cosmos, Stormgate seems to be the long-awaited answer to the community’s loud calls for novelties. Both fans and professionals seem to have already made up their minds; Stormgate is meant to be the next Starcraft.
