GTA 6 is the big release that the gaming world is waiting for in 2025. But Borderlands also has a loyal fanbase, so the release of the loot shooter also raises some expectations. To ensure that the two highly anticipated games do not interfere with each other, the head of their parent company has a plan.
Who is it about? GTA 6 is published by Take-Two Interactive – just like the upcoming loot shooter Borderlands 4. Both GTA developer Rockstar Games and Borderlands developer Gearbox Software are subsidiaries of the American publisher.
The CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, has now given an insight into the release plan of both games in an interview with IGN and thereby indirectly narrowed down the release date for GTA 6.
Take-Two wants you to have plenty of time to play
What does the CEO say about the release planning? Zelnick was asked in the interview whether Borderlands 4 and GTA 6 could harm each other because their releases are too close together.
The release of Borderlands 4 is on September 23, 2025. Gearbox Software announced this on February 12, 2025, at Sony’s State of Play. GTA 6 is also expected to be released in fall 2025 – at least that is the current status.
Zelnick responded that Take-Two plans the releases in such a way that players have enough time to play both games: “No, I don’t think we will schedule the releases in a way that causes a problem. […] So we feel good about it, and I think we will time our releases to respect the consumers’ need to spend a lot of time playing these hit games before they move on to the next one.”
What does this mean for the release of GTA 6? Assuming that GTA 6 is indeed supposed to be released in 2025, as Take-Two recently confirmed again, the statement from the CEO significantly narrows down the possible release window for GTA 6.
Here are the facts once more:
- GTA 6 is scheduled for fall 2025.
- Borderlands 4 will be released on September 23.
- Meteorologically, fall runs from September 1 to November 30.
- Calendarically, fall runs from September 22 to December 21.
So theoretically, GTA 6 must be released sometime between September 1 and December 21. However, since Borderlands 4 will be released in September, that month is actually out – at least if we believe Zelnick that Take-Two is planning enough time for players to enjoy Borderlands 4.
This leaves only October, November, and December for a possible release of GTA 6 in 2025, with October also potentially free for Borderlands 4 since the loot shooter is coming out at the end of September. The weeks leading up to Christmas are generally considered unlikely for a major release like GTA 6.
However, before you place all your vacation days in November, keep in mind that experts and industry insiders expect that GTA 6 will be delayed. Some anticipate a release in 2026: Insider is sure that the release of GTA 6 will be delayed
