George R.R. Martin has critically commented on a well-known series whose ending is, to put it mildly, controversial. His harsh words make the much-anticipated conclusion of his own book series all the more intriguing.
Which series is it about? Lost aired from 2004 to 2010 over 6 seasons and was a true phenomenon. The story follows the survivors of a plane crash who are stranded on an island.
Numerous twists and new revelations kept the suspense alive for a long time. However, the finale, which we do not want to spoil here, disappointed some viewers.
Too many questions raised throughout the series remained unanswered. Even a prominent viewer was frustrated with the ending: George R.R. Martin.
“We watched it every week”
What does George R.R. Martin say? The author of the popular book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” was one of the enthusiastic viewers of Lost.
As early as 2011, he commented to The New Yorker about the series and explained why he appreciated it:
I watched it repeatedly and was fascinated. They introduced these things, and I thought I knew where it was headed. Then they introduced something else, and I had to revise my opinion.
All of this built a high expectation for the ending that was supposed to lead the numerous established plot lines to a satisfying conclusion. When asked, George R.R. Martin believes that the attempt has failed:
We watched it every week and tried to understand it, and the further the plot progressed, the more I kept saying: ‘They better have come up with something good for the ending. The ending here has to pay off.’ And then I felt so cheated when we got to the end.
Martin’s view is particularly interesting when one considers how the ending of Game of Thrones, the series adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire”, was received by the audience – and what the current status of the books themselves is.
Why is the comparison interesting? The ending of the series Game of Thrones is still controversial today. This is partly due to the fact that from Season 6 onwards, the production could no longer adhere to the book template – simply because it did not exist.
Especially Season 8 and the finale are controversial, also because they disregarded the advice of the creator of Westeros. George R.R. Martin could comfort the sad fan hearts with another and better ending in book form. However, readers have been waiting for the sixth volume of the series since 2011, and Martin seems unable to finish it.
The actual ending will anyway only take place in Volume 7. Some fans doubt that the author, who is already 77 years old, will ever finish his epic.
And then it has to be good. George R.R. Martin is an experienced storyteller and recognizes an unsatisfying ending when he sees it – as in the case of Lost. Whether he will bring the many plot lines and characters of his own story to a perfect conclusion? Time will tell. Appropriately: “There’s no plan” – More than 6 years after the finale of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin reveals what happens if he can’t finish his saga
