The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online is getting the major expansion Blackwood in June 2021. This will also introduce a companion system in the MMORPG. MeinMMO explains how to unlock the new companion system.
What are the Companions in ESO? The companions are NPCs (engl.: non-player character) that you can summon as allies in combat after unlocking them. They support you in your journeys through Tamriel. In PvE group content like dungeons and trials, they take the place of a player.
This allows you to fill groups when a player is missing and you don’t want to wait for group searching. However, in PvP content and solo arenas, the companions cannot fight by your side.

Additionally, similar to Elder Scrolls V – Skyrim, you can equip your companions with gear. You can also customize them with costumes and outfit styles, as well as choose their mount, select abilities, and give combat instructions.
The companions also have their own personalities. Your actions affect the relationship between your character and the companion. Good relationships can unlock new dialogue options. Therefore, it’s worth paying attention to which NPC is summoned at which time.
How can you unlock the companions in ESO?
First, you need access to the chapter Blackwood. Make sure when purchasing whether you own the base game or not. You can also choose between a standard and a collector’s edition.
To unlock a companion, you need the corresponding quest, which we will introduce to you shortly. After completing the quests, you can find the companions in your collection (U) under Allies → Companions.
What companions are there in ESO?
Bastian Hallix – A good-hearted and persistent Imperial Dragonknight. He is a representative of the noble and wealthy trading house Silvelles from Daggerfall. His special ability Bastian’s Insight grants a chance to enhance found potions.
Mirri Elendis – A cheeky and headstrong Dark Elf Nightblade known for her loose tongue and casual relationship with law and order. She is an expert in the field of Daedra. Her special ability Mirri’s Expertise gives you a chance to receive additional loot from treasure chests.
Which quest unlocks the companions and where can you find them?
The quests for Bastian Hallix and Mirri Elendis can both be found in Blackwood:
- Bastian Hallix – The corresponding quest Competition and Contracts can be found south of the Etched Vale on the coast. To start the quest, you must speak to the companion directly.
- Mirri Elendis – The quest Battered and Scattered can be found north of the Doomvault Vulpinaz in the north of Blackwood. It starts with reading the note Adventurer Wanted for an Exciting Matter!, which you can find on the ground. Alternatively, you can talk to Mirri a bit further north.
