The Twitch streamer Asmongold is a passionate mount collector in World of Warcraft. But three mounts are driving him crazy in WoW – and sapping all his motivation.
Asmongold is the biggest streamer in terms of World of Warcraft and likes to leverage this reach to draw attention to specific issues in World of Warcraft. One of his great passions is collecting mounts – he has one of the largest mount collections of all time. The more it annoys him when there are mounts he simply cannot obtain.
After nearly two years of Shadowlands, he sent Blizzard a message and simply asked: Have you even thought about this?
Which mounts are we talking about? We are talking about the three Necroray mounts that were introduced with Shadowlands. These mounts are considered particularly rare because you only have a chance to obtain them every few days. The mounts stem from the “Necroray Egg,” which is only obtained from the Calling quests in Maldraxxus – but with an extremely low drop chance.
Many players who have been farming these boxes at every opportunity since the launch of Shadowlands have yet to see a single one of these eggs – and the fact that they need 3 to obtain all 3 mounts makes it even more frustrating.
What is the design goal regarding the Necroray Eggs that drop from the Calling boxes in Maldraxxus? I have opened around 170 of these boxes and have received 0 eggs so far, thinking that maybe I’m just unlucky. I looked online and there are people who have opened over 300 boxes without a single egg.
Assuming the chance of an egg is somewhere between 1:50 and 1:100, an average player would have to farm these Callings for an entire year, provided all covenants are equally represented (Anyone who is serious would join the Maldraxxus covenant so that the “Kill enemies in the Maw” and “Collect rare items” quests would also give a Maldraxxus box since they are based on the current covenant) just to get a single egg – not to mention the three eggs needed to obtain all the mounts.
365 days, divided by 4 covenants, and so on.
As someone who has farmed every single Paragon mount in the game, farming this [Necroray Eggs specifically] is a massive step down in a negative way. Looking at the comments on wowhead, other players feel the same. If this is indeed the intended design, so be it! I’ll just keep farming, lol. However, it seems inappropriate that you have to collect such a reward 3 times for just a recolor of a mount that was already available in patch 7.3 on Argus and you need to farm 10 times as much for it.
I don’t want to come off as a salty mount collector (I am), because I haven’t received the drop, but rather draw attention to this issue and ask the honest question, as I believe it is not intended when considering the previous Calling and Paragon rewards.
During the stream, he later added:
I don’t think they really thought this through. They just half-heartedly put it in this box and didn’t think about it anymore.
The community has been begging for a long time: Asmongold’s experiences resonate with many players. If you look in the various forums or simply on the “Necroray Egg” page of wowhead, the comments there are similarly frustrated.
- “I consider the existence of these eggs a rumor. Since the release of Shadowlands, I have opened countless of these boxes, all a no-show.”
- “I got the first egg pretty quickly, after the 2nd box or so. I got number 2 yesterday after 297 attempts. Hopefully I won’t need that many boxes for the third egg.”
- “I hate being this type of person, but this is really painful.
I have done every single Necrolord Calling quest on at least one character since the expansion started, sometimes even on 5 characters at the same time, yet still 0 eggs received.”
It is definitely possible that Blizzard has simply set the drop chance for these eggs too low, as currently they are one of the hardest mounts to earn, requiring an extremely high time investment and then also a lot of luck.
However, there are also a few players who have apparently had extreme luck and even received more than 3 eggs. These players know that from the 4th egg (and all subsequent ones) only green slime hatches, which can be sold for a few hundred gold pieces.
Maybe the developers just needed a nudge to change the chance for these eggs.
Have you already obtained all the Necroray mounts? Or did you not even know that there are mounts available?
We have introduced 7 cool mounts from Shadowlands that are easy to farm.
