New World – For Fans of Exploration and Crafting
Genre: MMORPG | Developer: Amazon | Platform: PC | Release Date: September 28, 2021| Model: Buy-to-Play | Combat System: Dynamic Action Combat System
Why You Should Play New World
Ideal for: New World is a game for fans of unusual MMORPGs. The game features no classes; instead, there are weapon-defined attributes. You can level your hero freely according to your wishes and expand them at will. Additionally, the setting is in the 17th century on a fictional, newly discovered island in the Atlantic, where all inhabitants are immortal for mysterious reasons.
The combat system is also unusual; it is an action system with active targeting and dodging/blocking. However, it does not feel hectic and chaotic, but rather takes place at a leisurely pace thanks to the long animations.
Crafting is not just an accessory in New World, as the game was once designed as a survival title, and this is still evident in New World, especially with its complex crafting.
Is there a catch? Of course, not everything runs smoothly in the new world. The game still suffers from a lack of content in the endgame. Particularly in PvP, exciting activities are currently still lacking.
While PvE content is sufficiently available, a large portion of it caters to hardcore players. People who only check into the game occasionally have little to do and face a long grind ahead.
In addition, there are annoying bugs and exploits that spoil the gameplay experience. New World has a lot of potential but still needs to smooth out its rough edges.
Moreover, the action combat system is not suitable for every MMORPG fan. Those who prefer comfortable tab-targeting will find nothing to enjoy here. New World also does not have an epic story. The narrative serves more as a background meta-plot about a destructive substance, but is wonderful and complex if one delves deeper into it.
What is New World? New World was released in 2021 and was the first MMORPG project from Amazon Game Studios. Originally, it was meant to be an open-world survival RPG set in South America. Later, the game was reoriented and a fantasy plot involving a newly discovered island and magic was introduced.
New World became an MMORPG focused on PvE with an action combat system, a lot of open-world gameplay, as well as sandbox elements such as housing and strong crafting. It also offers exciting PvP content.
The style of New World is realistic and understated. It is clearly a western MMORPG without overly flashy effects and color explosions. Your characters are not chosen heroes by fate, but rather simple explorers seeking their fortune in the new world.
The Features of New World
This is how the combat system works: New World takes a different approach than classic MMORPGs like WoW or Final Fantasy XIV. Here, you do not target an enemy with the Tab key and then just spam your predefined skills.
Instead, you have to directly aim at the enemy and then strike purposefully. However, if you do not aim well, your attacks will go to waste. This is especially important in ranged combat, as New World plays almost like a shooter here.
Your weapons also determine what abilities you can use. The weapon is essentially a substitute for the classes that do not exist in this form in New World. Instead, you choose your weapon and therefore your role in the game. You can, of course, change your equipment at any time and quickly switch between the “classes”.
Curious fact: The heavier your armor is, the slower and clumsier you move, so it is important to keep an eye on the weight as well. You can actually only perform a real dodge roll with light armor.
This is how crafting works: Crafting is just an accessory in many MMORPGs, often ignored in the endgame. In New World, it is different. Here, crafting items and maximizing crafting skills are clearly among the endgame activities.
So you can only get the best stuff if you painstakingly craft it yourself as a master craftsman. But before you get there, you have to craft for many hours and use a ton of rare resources. So, if you want to dive intoa complex crafting system, you are in the right place.
This is what the PVP is all about: New World offers several PVP options, all of which are optional. You can freely engage in battles in the open world, but only if you want to. If you’re not interested in PVP, you can just march stoically through the battles that regularly break out between the three factions in the world.
However, if you enjoy fighting against other players, you can even conquer areas of the world for your faction and then demand taxes from players. The areas are always contested, leading to continually new political constellations.
If you prefer PVP with fixed rules, you can enjoy yourself in instances such as the outpost captures. Here it’s about capturing and holding three fixed objectives.
Is something coming soon? New World receives regular updates and patches. However, there is still no clear roadmap of what is coming when. So far, we only know that new areas and PVP content are planned.
However, when all of this will come into the game has not yet been revealed by Amazon.
