There are numerous online role-playing games on the market, each promoting its own concepts and ideas to win over players. Therefore, the choice is not easy, which is why we present the best MMORPGs in 2022 to assist you in making your decision.
Update February 28, 2023: We have written a new article about the best MMORPGs of 2023. This post will no longer be updated.
Anyone choosing an online role-playing game must be aware that these games are time-consuming, and it takes significant effort to succeed. So think carefully before committing to an MMO!
To ensure that this commitment does not lead to frustration and disappointment, we have compiled a selection of special online role-playing games, presenting their strengths and weaknesses. This way, you can see which game is suitable for which type of player.
How was the selection made? We focused on several factors for this list. First, we wanted to select games that are still alive and receive regular new content. Then, we ensured that various genres and settings are included, such as theme park MMORPGs, sandbox games, fantasy scenarios, and sci-fi settings.
World of Warcraft – The Complete Package

Reasons to play WoW
WoW is ideal for: Fans of classic MMORPGs who also value a large community and a rich backstory behind their game. WoW is and remains the largest PC MMORPG for an indefinite time, which continues to guarantee a high quality of new content.
It is also the “most complete” MMORPG, appealing to almost every type of player and allowing them to spend countless hours in it. Whether as a PvP player in battlegrounds, as a collector of companion pets, or as a group player in raids or dungeons.
WoW also appeals to casual players because it can be consumed in smaller bites.
Is there a catch? One should have a sympathy for a timeless, cartoonish graphic style and the conventional, less action-oriented tab-targeting combat system.
And for some players, the current version of WoW is too simplistic. For such players, WoW Classic would be attractive, existing as its own MMORPG since August 2019. Also, the current content drought is taking a toll on many players.
What is WoW? World of Warcraft has been on the market since 2004 and is more beautiful than ever after eight expansions. The old-fashioned comic graphics have been significantly enhanced since the expansion Warlords of Draenor and with the current expansion Shadowlands, you can noticeably see that WoW does not show its age at all, especially in the new areas.
If “eight expansions” scare you – don’t worry, they are all automatically included in the latest expansion “Shadowlands“.
Anyone wanting to recapture the feeling of the past can also start playing WoW Classic since 2019.
What is WoW Classic? WoW Classic features its own servers, which are roughly at the state of 2004. The idea behind it is that players wanted to experience the old feeling of the past. Classic is mainly aimed at players who cannot get into the new expansions and features of WoW.
By now, you can even purchase the first expansion, The Burning Crusade, in WoW Classic and thus return to the time of the first expansion.
Anyone paying for a WoW subscription can play both Classic and the current retail version at the same time.
The Features of WoW
Getting into WoW is easy: Not only has the graphics improved, but with Shadowlands, starting World of Warcraft has never been easier. Players who boost their character to level 50 will receive a detailed tutorial before starting, so they can understand their class right away. After that, the last 10 levels must be completed on their own.
This is ideal for complete newcomers and returning players. Thanks to the radically reduced skills and talents, you always have an overview of your abilities and can easily and comfortably build a meaningful skill rotation.
All of this comes at the cost of complexity, and compared to previous WoW versions, Shadowlands has become greatly simplified. Not everyone may like this, but the gameplay is certainly fun, even if the static tab-target system of World of Warcraft may seem outdated to some now. However, the latest new class Demon Hunter plays dynamically nonetheless.
Moreover, World of Warcraft, thanks to its long existence and Blizzard’s high update frequency, now offers an enormous amount of content. The old content is still available, and those who wish can spend months exploring Azeroth.
Here’s how to get WoW: Those who want to play World of Warcraft, however, must pay 13 Euros monthly. But a free trial account is available up to level 20.
