Everquest
Everquest was released in 1999 and aimed to consistently further what Meridian 59 excelled at. Instead of an isometric view, Sony Online Entertainment relied on the first-person perspective and offered players the chance to explore the vast world up close.
Everquest, which is still active today thanks to numerous add-ons and updates, aims to provide a classic role-playing experience reminiscent of tabletop gaming sessions like D&D. You are heroes and fight in groups against monsters, complete quests, find treasures, and explore dark dungeons. A story ties the adventures together. The joining of other players in guilds also plays an important role. PvP is only possible on special servers and in designated areas, and then only when players agree to a duel.
Even after the release of Everquest 2 in 2004, the classic maintained a loyal fanbase and is still enjoyed today. Blizzard heavily drawn inspiration from Everquest in the creation of World of Warcraft. One of the WoW fathers, Jeff Kaplan, was the leader of a large Everquest guild.
