Rank 1: Gothmog
- Subsidiary type: unknown
Gothmog ranks first in this ranking, albeit in brackets. For in the book, it was never clarified whether Gothmog is even an orc. It could just as well be a Nazgûl or even a Maia. Maiar are powerful beings older than the world itself and walk in various forms in Middle-earth.
In the film, however, Gothmog is depicted as a deformed orc, which is why we include him in this ranking.
Gothmog was a great general and served the Witch-king as the governor of Minas Morgul. He was a dangerous war leader who commanded the assaults on Osgiliath and Minas Tirith. He not only acted brutally but also very cunningly. For example, he attacked his enemies from an unexpected direction. He was also adept at intimidating his opponents. For instance, he had the heads of slain soldiers catapulted into the besieged city.
In direct one-on-one combat, Gothmog also demonstrated extraordinary combat strength. Although he was ultimately defeated in battle by Aragorn and Gimli, it was not without having already defeated many foes. Moreover, his high rank suggests that he must have possessed enormous strength, which is at least customary for orcs.
Do you agree with the ranking? And which orc do you think is the coolest? Feel free to let us know in the comments! Although the candidates in this list are certainly dangerous, orcs as such are not considered particularly powerful.
