3. Nightingale – Survival meets Mary Poppins
Genre: Survival-MMO | Platform: PC | Release: Early access first half of 2023, full release only in 2024
This is Nightingale: Nightingale is a survival game with multiplayer factors, so it can be classified as an MMO. You find yourself in an alternate universe of the 19th century and encounter various imaginary but also real people who fit the period. Above all, however, you must, as always, save humanity.
Humanity has been overrun by a shady elf race and, apart from the eponymous city of Nightingale, is pretty scattered and at its end. You are on a quest as a “Realmwalker” to build a new fortress for yourself and your companions, helping humanity regain its former glory.
To do this, you travel through portals to different dimensions, which you are supposed to customize in various ways. A large part of Nightingale will consist of exploring these foreign dimensions.
To make sure it’s also fun, you can not only climb, fight, shoot, and cast spells, you also get an umbrella in your hand that allows you to glide over long distances. This strongly resembles a kind of Mary Poppins survival combined with the game’s clothing style.
In gameplay, Nightingale relies purely on a PvE experience. There will be no PvP, you primarily play together with others – if at all. Because Nightingale should also be interesting for solo players.
So far, the development has gone: We cannot say as much about Nightingale’s development as we can about the other titles on this list. The Survival-MMO was unveiled in December 2021 and is being developed by Inflexion Games. A team that mainly consists of former BioWare developers.
Thus, Nightingale will also focus on story content, even if this will not be the main focus.
- After the title was introduced in 2021, enthusiasm was high. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus even mentions Nightingale as one of the reasons why the survival genre will change.
- The game was initially supposed to be released in 2022, but due to several delays, that was not the case.
- In February 2022, we received the news that the gaming giant Tencent completely acquired Inflexion Games.
- In mid-2022, the early access date was then pushed to the first half of 2023. During early access, the game should remain for 9 to 12 months. However, initial open beta tests for Nightingale should be held in spring.
This could be Nightingale at best: The promises of Nightingale are great, and if the game can keep them, we are looking at a real highlight. A very innovative world, or rather worlds, that bring a successful crafting and building menu.
In addition, a completely unused setting with a considerable amount of fantasy involved. If the concept of Nightingale works, it could prove once again that the genre can work perfectly without PvP.
On the side, the BioWare experts could also show that survival doesn’t automatically mean that the story is merely a side issue. Many exciting characters have definitely been promised, and they are supposed to count as quest givers.
This could be Nightingale at worst: If everything goes wrong, Nightingale could quickly disappear again. If the formula for the different worlds doesn’t work and exploring them is not fun, Nightingale offers suddenly very little content.
Despite the team being made up of experienced members, Nightingale is nonetheless the debut work of Inflexion Games, so technical issues cannot be ruled out. The game needs to build a certain fanbase to survive.
This is planned for 2023: In spring 2023, initial open beta phases for Nightingale should take place, where hopefully as many players as possible get the chance to try out the game extensively.
Anyone who misses that can look forward to the early access release. There, the game will not yet be feature-complete but will be regularly updated. Thus, the year 2023 will be particularly exciting for the upcoming survival game.
With that, Nightingale is definitely one of the 8 new survival games you can look forward to in 2023.
