Apex Legends – Fast and Mobile
Genre: Battle Royale Hero Shooter | Developer: Respawn Entertainment | Platform: PC, PlayStation, Xbox | Release Date: February 4, 2019 | Model: Free-to-Play
Apex Legends is the Battle Royale from publisher EA and takes place in the world of the shooter series “Titanfall”. Unlike its spiritual predecessor, here you don’t fight mechanized Titans, but talented heroes – the legends, as the characters are called.
The shooter came a good bit after the first major BR titles PUBG and Fortnite and learned a lot from its genre competition.
Apex took the classic “Battle Royale” mechanics and added meaningful mechanics to find its own way: heroes with special abilities, fast movement, and frequent map rotations.
This has convinced the title’s fans for 3 years and remains fresh and varied thanks to regular new content.
How big is Apex? The shooter from EA reached over 140,000 concurrent players on average in January 2022 on Steam (via steamcharts.com). Additionally, there are fans on consoles and EA’s own launcher.
For a first impression, we embed a trailer here:
How does Apex Legends differ from other Battle Royale games? Compared to the other 3 BR shooters on the list, Apex places emphasis on unique heroes with their own skills.
Each character has 2 abilities that can be used relatively often and an “ultimate” that charges more slowly. This brings a lot of variety to the fights.
Additionally, there are many weapons that can be modified during the match with lootable attachments and play differently.
In general, you are also faster in Apex, and a stationary playstyle usually leads to less success than an approach with a lot of movement.
Who is Apex Legends for?
Apex is the Battle Royale for fans of MOBAs or hero shooters like Overwatch.
The different heroes bring a unique dynamic to the gameplay, and you should adapt your approach to the skills of the character.
The heroes also create situations where you are either at an advantage or a disadvantage. If you’re unlucky, you might encounter a counter-legend that neutralizes your abilities or have the upper hand right away because your counter is ready against another legend.
If you enjoy mastering the abilities of a character and are looking for a Battle Royale with more specialization opportunities, then Apex is for you.
How tough is the entry? Apex is fast, can be unfair, and offers a certain depth due to the heroes, which you need to adapt to.
Instead of just getting to know the weapons and equipment, you need knowledge about the opposing heroes and what nasty tricks they can pull on you. This takes time and experience.
This presents a certain hurdle, as in every hero-based game. But it also constitutes a lot of what makes Apex special.
What problems does the game have? There are often balancing and server issues. Especially after larger updates, the server problems can be annoying.
Personal Assessment of Apex Legends
For a conclusion about Apex, MeinMMO veteran Jürgen Horn is ready. He tests many new games for us, and if Jürgen finds a game he likes, he burns for it – so also for Apex.
Unfortunately, many games quickly fade away for which Jürgen has been passionate.
Personal Assessment Jürgen Horn: Since its completely surprising release in 2019, Apex Legends has not let go of me. Since then, I haven’t been able to see PUBG or Fortnite anymore. All these games seem sluggish, slow, and uninspiring to me.
This is because for me, Apex simply offers the perfect mix of gunplay, movement, and unique heroes. No game implements this special dynamic as well as Apex Legends.
Additionally, the continuous innovations, which never completely overhaul the game but always add new aspects, keep it fresh.
These include the speedy arena battles or constantly new maps that then reappear in a rotation (instead of simply disappearing like in Fortnite or Warzone).
Therefore, even 3 years after release, I can still regularly start Apex Legends and have an evening full of excitement and action, and each new season is like a small celebration.
After colorful (Fortnite) and crazy (Apex), we return to a more realistically styled shooter – Warzone. The Call of Duty Battle Royale has also thought of some exciting mechanics and is the most beginner-friendly of all the games on the list.
As is typical for CoD, however, you will also need to grind a bit to end up with the best weapons.
