Guild Wars 2
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: ArenaNet | Platform: PC | Release Date: August 26, 2012 | Model: Free2Play | Rating on Steam: 88% Positive
What kind of game is this? Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG aimed primarily at collectors, explorers, story enthusiasts, and casual players. One reason for this: The equipment level has not been increased since 2012.
Instead, the game focuses on horizontal progression, such as unlocking new abilities like gliding, riding, or using jumping mushrooms or climbing vines – to reach new regions in the vast game world.
You experience the story of the game through voiced dialogues and in-game events like dynamic events. There is housing, raids, dungeons, various PvP modes, jumping puzzles, and much more. Regular content updates and expansions provide new material. The current addon is called Janthir Wilds. You can see the trailer for the latest update for Janthir Wilds below:
Why is the entry here easy? Due to the strong story focus, automatic level scaling in the open world, and horizontal progression, Guild Wars 2 is perfect for newcomers. They are guided through the leveling phases and should never find themselves in a situation where they can’t cope with their freshly created character.
A starting area familiarizes you with the fights, the skills of your class, and the basics of Guild Wars 2. The fights are more action-packed than those in tab-targeting MMORPGs like WoW, especially since you can switch between two weapons at any time and often need to use your dodge roll. However, the difficulty level at the beginning is so moderate that you quickly accumulate successes.
Thanks to Free2Play access, the entire base game is open to you. If you then feel like more, you can consider whether you would like to try the paid expansions.
Is there a catch? Some of the events in the open world are designed for a certain number of players. You might only realize this once you are right in the middle of it. This can occasionally lead to frustration because you can’t achieve much on your own – thus missing out on one of the highlight contents of the game.
Guild Wars 2 can be overwhelming with its numerous currencies, resources, and item types – especially since it’s not always immediately clear what the just collected loot is actually good for. If you’re looking for tips, check this out: All guides, beginner tips, and builds for Guild Wars 2
