Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Alternative names: Net-juu no Susume
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Episodes: 10
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
At 30 years old, Moriko Morioka has become unemployed for the first time in her life – and is damn happy about it. She spends her new free time in an MMORPG playing the attractive and pleasant Hayashi. Without social constraints and associated problems like in the real world, she quickly becomes friends with the nice healer Lily in the game. After a short time, the two become inseparable in the game. Moriko immerses herself more and more in her role as Hayashi, until she ultimately only leaves her apartment in case of absolute emergency.
However, she does not yet know that 28-year-old Yuuta on the other side of the city is also playing the same MMORPG, and a chance meeting in a store is needed to set more in motion…
What to expect from Recovery of an MMO Junkie: The anime strikes a balance between romance and comedy and does not take itself too seriously. At the same time, many MMORPG fans who have experienced friendships or even crushes in MMOs might find themselves in this story. Sometimes, it is simply difficult to separate pure gameplay from feelings for others in social games.
Even though the series sometimes plays with genre-typical coincidences that simply seem a bit too fantastic, many MMORPG fans may recognize themselves in the characters.
Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense
Alternative names: Itai no wa Iya Nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Moimasu
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
Episodes: 24 (2 seasons)
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
After Kaede is convinced by her friend to try out the new MMORPG “New World Online”, she quickly takes a liking to the game. As “Maple”, she begins her journey and has one thing in mind: no pain. Therefore, she puts all her stats into vitality. This causes her defense value to keep rising, and she ultimately exploits a “bug”. She earns several titles and items and ends up being a nearly insurmountable fortress of defense – yet has no clue about the game.
Even though she is so overpowered, she still has much to learn and is therefore dependent on the help of others. So she wants to build a guild and participate in events – while she unknowingly becomes an online legend as the girl that no one can defeat.
What to expect from Bofuri: Bofuri is simply pleasant and sometimes cute entertainment. It is not about big issues like actual survival, but about playing together in an MMORPG with somewhat absurd rules and developers who apparently shy away from patching Maple’s defense “exploit”.
The series thrives mainly on the interesting and heartfelt characters and the quite captivating adventures that, despite Maple’s unfair advantage, do not get boring quickly. Basically, Bofuri is a funnier Sword Art Online without the drama.
Restaurant to Another World
Alternative names: Isekai Shokudou
Genre: Fantasy, Slice-of-Life
Episodes: 12
Stream available on: Crunchyroll
In every fantasy world, there is the legend of a mysterious door that leads to a legendary place in a foreign world where all wishes come true. And this door exists. It leads to a restaurant that is only open on Saturdays and where the most delicious dishes are prepared that one could only dream of.
Heroes, kings, mages, and simple thieves from every world yearn for a meal from this tavern and bring their own unique stories and issues from their respective realms.
What to expect from Restaurant to Another World: This series is an anime like no other. Much calmer than other representatives on this list, the series can be described as “wholesome”. Each episode focuses on different characters, all of whom are visitors to this mysterious restaurant. Along the way, exciting and interesting backstories are revealed.
If you are not in the mood for everlasting action or heavy drama, you get a nice story with heartwarming moments in between. This is not an anime that you will rave about for years – but one that you will remember fondly.
