How many players have actually played World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, The Elder Scrolls Online, and others over the years? MeinMMO has scoured the internet for official developer information and found 15 active MMORPGs for which there are official player numbers.
In March 2025, MeinMMO first presented a Top 10 of MMORPGs with the most players on Steam. The advantage of Steam: Websites like Steam Charts reliably and comparably display player numbers on Valve’s platform.
But what about the total populations of the genre? In other words: How many players have played WoW and others over the years? To answer exactly these questions, MeinMMO has prepared a list of online role-playing games that
- are still active,
- for which there are reasonably current official figures on the total number of players from the responsible developers or publishers
- and that have more than 4 million players.
Since such official announcements only go live in homeopathic doses (and this is long not the case for every active MMORPG), you should not expect a comprehensive list of all genre representatives here. Also note: The longer the respective announcement is, the higher the actual numbers are likely to be by now.
If we have overlooked a game or the related number update from the respective developers, feel free to drop it in the comments. Then we’ll expand the list with the respective MMORPG.
Place 15 – Throne and Liberty
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: NCSoft | Platform: PC, Consoles | Release Date: October 1, 2024 | Model: Free2Play
What is known about the total number of players? Just under a month after release, in November 2024, the officials from Amazon Games revealed that by then 4,527,940 players had played the new online role-playing game from NCSoft on PC and consoles.
It is also clear that the numbers of active players have gradually decreased since then. Thanks to the new expansion Wilderness of Talandre, you can turn the negative trend around and almost double the player numbers – at least on PC. What the current numbers look like on consoles is unclear.
Here you can see the launch trailer for Wilderness of Talandre for Throne and Liberty:
What kind of game is this? The MMORPG from NCSoft (Aion, Guild Wars, Lineage) focuses on a – for modern online role-playing games – unusual emphasis on the “massively” in “Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game”.
You encounter more characters in the game world than one typically finds in many other MMORPGs. Many contents are also aimed at guilds – those who want to get the most out of the MMORPG should join a community of like-minded individuals. Many of the group and raid challenges have a (partially optional) PvP element.
The servers and technology are designed to bring many characters together in one region without noticeable performance drops. For Throne and Liberty, you also don’t need a Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus membership. Additionally, the MMORPG was released with a Free2Play payment model. So just trying it out is easy.
Who is this interesting for? Anyone who likes an MMORPG that places a strong emphasis on guild and raid content with hundreds and sometimes even more than 1,000 players should definitely try Throne and Liberty. Simply exploring the game world, questing, leveling up, and participating in events while player characters are everywhere is a great feeling.
