Place 3: Sequester
- 5,000 Gold
- Can be learned by wizards
- Spell level 7
The spell Sequester requires for casting the powder of three different gemstones: a diamond, a ruby, and a sapphire, which together must be worth at least 5,000 gold.
The spell may sound a little less impressive at first: An object or a willing creature becomes invisible through the touch of the caster and cannot be detected by any divination magic or spying. Not bad, but to pay 5,000 gold for that?
What makes the spell truly powerful is what it implies. For it causes the object or creature to cease to exist almost. If it is a creature, it falls into a state of suspended animation. Time stands still for them, they do not age, and this will remain so for the duration of the spell.
The spell is only interrupted when a chosen condition occurs (this can be an action or “after 1,000 years”) or if the target takes damage.
This ultimately makes Sequester a bit more powerful and epic than regular Invisibility.
Place 2 – Honorable Mention: Time Ravage
- 5,000 Gold
- Can be learned by wizards
- Spell level 9
The spell Time Ravage earns an honorable mention on this list. It is a necromancy spell, but more precisely Dunamancy, from the universe of Critical Role. Those who have already seen the second animated series of Critical Role, The Mighty Nein on Amazon Prime will have heard of this magic.
Once a homebrew magic by Matt Mercer, Dunamancy is an arcane power of the Krynn dynasty that focuses particularly on controlling and influencing time and gravity.
Time Ravage requires for casting an hourglass filled with diamond dust worth at least 5,000 gold, which is consumed by the spell. The creature targeted by the spell must make a Constitution saving throw to halve the severe damage of 10D12 but also to escape another effect: On a failed saving throw, it begins to age rapidly, to the point that it has only 30 days left before it dies of old age.
In this state, it has disadvantages on all rolls and its movement speed is halved. To dispel the spell and save the target’s life, only Wish or Greater Restoration at level 9 can help.
Since Time Ravage is only possible through Dunamancy, which comes from the setting “Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount” and the universe of Critical Role, it receives an honorable mention but due to its price directly the silver medal. There is only one other spell from Dungeons & Dragons that is even more expensive.
