Place 2: Saruman
While Saruman initially appears as an ally, he soon switches to Sauron’s side. He hopes to gain possession of the One Ring himself and rule over Middle-earth.
To do this, he breeds his own Uruk-hai army, spies on royal houses like that of Rohan, and schemes diligently. He also attempts to convince Gandalf of his plans, but fails. In battle, he defeats his old friend and imprisons him.
The sheer mass of minions makes Saruman extremely dangerous. His Uruk-hai destroy the Fellowship’s alliance, cause enormous damage in Helm’s Deep, and after the end of the War of the Ring, the wizard himself still rules as a tyrant in the Shire. The latter was changed for the films – just one of many differences from the books.
