Shooter expert Sven Galitzki from MeinMMO is more torn about the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War than ever before with any CoD. He is looking forward to the single-player, but sees hardly any reason to get the game for the multiplayer. “The blame” lies with Warzone and Modern Warfare.
When does Black Ops Cold War release? There is now only about a week until the release of the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The new CoD 2020 will be released on November 13, 2020, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One – Next-Gen versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X will follow.
And just a week before release, many players are still asking themselves: Should I get the new CoD or not? I’m still struggling with myself.

Call of Duty 2020 vs. Modern Warfare and Warzone
This is how I look forward to the new CoD Black Ops Cold War: I have to admit, I am so undecided this time as I have never been with a “Call of Duty” offshoot – and that, despite the fact that Black Ops is one of my absolute favorites in the CoD franchise.
On the one hand, there are several things I am really excited about in Cold War. On the other hand, I see at certain – for some quite crucial – points simply no reason why I should transition to the new Call of Duty.
That’s why I look forward to the new CoD 2020: There are several things I look forward to in the new CoD – for example, the campaign.
The new CoD directly ties to one of my favorite offshoots: Black Ops 1. The cool secret agent story from the original, which I think is one of the best that CoD has to offer story-wise to this day, will finally continue. I can’t wait to dive into the story and hunt the mysterious Soviet spy Perseus throughout history.
I am also eagerly looking forward to zombies, the flagship of Treyarch. Because the latest interpretation of the popular co-op mode looks really promising and already makes me want more.
That’s why I’m still undecided about the purchase: On the other hand, I am currently going through a kind of dilemma and there are also some things that make a potential purchase difficult for me – especially the multiplayer of CoD Cold War. And this aspect is traditionally a decisive role for many fans, players, and interested parties. After all, the MP is the soul of a CoD for many.
This does not mean that Black Ops Cold War is bad in this area – it is more that other games from the same company are at least just as good, currently even offer the better overall package or are also playable without Cold War. Specifically, I mean the direct predecessor title Modern Warfare as well as Battle Royale Warzone.
Call of Duty has essentially set itself back with these successful titles in its 2020 offshoot – at least regarding multiplayer. Therefore, I personally see few to no reasons to transition to the new CoD Cold War if you own Modern Warfare or are only interested in the battle royale action in Warzone.
Modern Warfare has grown and is good – Why switch?
Modern Warfare not only received some paid map DLCs spread throughout the year, but it was also maintained like a real Game as a Service and supplied with fresh content for the first time, and still is. Moreover, all gameplay-relevant content such as new maps or base weapons is available for free to all players.
Currently, Modern Warfare thus offers a substantial package with numerous new and classic modes, maps, and weapons, where essentially something is available for every taste. You do not have to spend additional money for it. Also, Modern Warfare has managed to hit just the right nerve regarding other important factors like time to kill, movement speed, or map layout – at least for me.
With Warzone, they have established a successful battle royale with millions of players alongside Modern Warfare, which some see as the current genre leader. Although Warzone is also supposed to continue with Cold War and beyond, it remains playable outside of Modern Warfare and is also available completely free as a standalone version – without Modern Warfare, but also without Cold War.
I see it this way: Black Ops Cold War will rely on the same seasonal content model including battle pass as Modern Warfare, but will start with a smaller scope than CoD MW has now – for all owners, mind you, free. Warzone, which particularly appeals to me, I can also play with Modern Warfare or completely independently of both main titles. In crucial areas like TTK, maps, certain modes, health regeneration, or movement speed, Black Ops Cold War played worse for me in the alpha and beta than Modern Warfare.
And so, from a multiplayer perspective, I currently see no reasons why I must absolutely get the new CoD Cold War. At the point where, as a shooter and big “Call of Duty” fan, I usually say almost every year, “So, it’s time for the new CoD,” I am now at a point where I essentially think for the first time, “Why even? I’m really still satisfied with what I have right now.”
My current conclusion: With Modern Warfare and Warzone, Call of Duty has done a lot of things right and finally found a healthy way to deliver new content and generate additional revenue without turning players against them – especially in connection with Warzone.
But this positive development now makes it difficult for the successor Black Ops Cold War to stand out and make a truly innovative and special separation from its predecessor.
This has also made it clearer than ever to me what numerous players have been emphasizing for years: If done right, you don’t need a new CoD every year. Does this make Black Ops Cold War a bad game? By no means. If you missed Modern Warfare, CoD Cold War will certainly be worth it for shooter enthusiasts and series fans.
The most positive aspects from MW will also be continued there and will also have a lot of cool and new things to offer, which one can look forward to. But precisely for this reason, buying the new CoD Cold War is not as “urgent” as in previous years – especially if you have CoD MW or only play Warzone.
Will I now get Black Ops Cold War? I strongly assume so. But not for the regular multiplayer part of the game.
What do you think about it? What are your thoughts on the new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War? Will you get it at release, wait, or possibly even abstain? Is the purchase worth it for pure multiplayer fans in your view? Let me and other readers of MeinMMO know in the comments.
By the way, a leak about Call of Duty 2021 suggests that it will be another Modern Warfare
